Jazz Band

Chelsea , on May 21, 2018 at 8:09 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
Hello!
So I want to have a jazz band (more like Frank Sinatra style) BUT i want the dance floor to be fun and listen to upbeat music. So I figured the jazz band for the first couple hours and then transfer over to the party! Should I hire a DJ, or just bring an iPod?? Does anyone have any suggestions or dealing with this now??

Thanks In advance!!

If you’re able to budget for both, I would hire a DJ for after the band to make sure they keep the energy of the room up.

Thank you!!! I wasn’t sure if that would be doing too much. And I also don’t know if that would be in the budget. I’m just now throwing around ideas to my fiancé

I think it also depends how late the Jazz band would play until and how large of a wedding you’re having. My FBIL had only an iPad for his wedding and it was perfect for his small intimate wedding. I could also see it working if it’s a time when some people would be leaving or if it was getting late. If you want the party to continue, I personally would suggest going with a DJ if it’s within your budget. Another option is looking at local colleges for a jazz trio or small ensemble. That would definitely save you some and would sound just as good! You could use them for cocktail hour and then switch for reception? I’m just spitballing ideas here 😊

Love the idea for cocktail hour but if you want a party/dancing atmosphere after you'll need a DJ too! Some DJ companies have musicians for hire by the hour to add to your entertainment package, so maybe look for a company that offers both?

The band I hired had the option to have a smaller group (5 piece) play during dinner and they performed Rat Pack music. Then after dinner more musicians came to make it a 9 piece band. They performed songs across the decades. We had them play big band/swing, 50s/60s, motown/funk. They could also play modern music. They were really skilled and a huge hit. Perhaps you can find a band that can play it all?

Hi, I know the original post is old but wondering what you decided to do? We are planning to have a jazz band for the cocktail hour, dinner and to do first dances. Then we will move to a DJ. Initially we considered a band for the entire evening but my fiance is Jamaican and I have Latino roots. We want to be sure a diverse genre of music can be played and enjoyed. Just wondering how this worked for you?
