Jazz band or dj for a brunch wedding?

Min Jung, on January 6, 2019 at 7:43 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4

I'm having a small (~60 guests) brunch wedding at a hotel ballroom. My FH and I want people to mingle, chat, and (maybe) dance during the brunch reception (~1 pm to 4 pm). So what we envision is first dance, seated lunch, speeches spread throughout the reception, and dance if the music is right.

I did find a band that's in my budget, but I'm hesitant to make a decision for two reasons: 1) due to the budget, there'll only be drums, bass, keys, and a vocal. Would this set-up be enough to create the ambiance that we want? 2) Although we've seen sample videos, the band's quality may not be guaranteed.

Anyone else planning a brunch wedding or have worked with a small jazz band? Should I consider a DJ instead?

I had 2 bands for my reception - a smaller 5-piece band during dinner and a larger 9-piece band (some of the same 5 musicians from the dinner band) for the dancing after dinner. People loved the 5-piece band. They played Rat Pack tunes and did a great job. I hired my band(s) based on their videos they posted on their website as well as on youtube of other events they performed at so I got a good sense of how good they were. I was definitely not disappointed. In fact, a year later, I still have people say how much they loved that band. I think your guests would really enjoy a band. It adds something special to an event.

Also, on a side note, I would suggest that you don't spread the speeches out throughout the reception. Guests usually just want to enjoy themselves dancing and mingling and don't want to be constantly interrupted. I would have the speeches - and actually these should be toasts no more than 2-3 minutes in length - at the beginning of the lunch to welcome everyone and then while everyone is eating. This way you get them out of the way and guests can enjoy the event.

Hi Min Jung! I think having a band of that size would be awesome for a brunch wedding! I feel like they have all the right instruments for either a more relaxed vibe or if people want to dance they can pick up the tempo as well! If you feel like they have a great sound, I say go for it! It'll be so fun for the reception!

I think the music is going to determine if people dance or not. People don't usually do a lot of dancing at day time weddings(sometimes they do) So if you really want your guest to dance the music needs to be awesome! Go with whoever provides the best music for dancing
