January wedding in Minnesota??

Sierra , on July 12, 2018 at 3:38 PM Posted in Planning 0 15
Hey all!
My fiancé and I are wanting to get married in January as I will be graduating from college in December and we want to live together afterwards- old fashioned values and all! However that is only 6 MONTHS away and we just got engaged- and the wedding will be in Minnesota. Is this crazy??? My mom had been trying to talk me out of it but my fiancé and I are just so ready, and excited and already have a date we love. Thoughts??

It depends on what type of event you want to have. If you want something that takes a lot of time, money and planning, then yest 6 months is not enough time. If you are OK with going casual, then I think you can make it work. Being off-season will help some, too.

Fellow MN bride here! As far as the weather totally do-able. I had a friend get married last January and it was so warm it rained instead of snowed. But I think the big hiccup will be finding a venue as most I looked at were full a year out (but I only looked at 4 so who knows). If you are willing to be flexible on your venue and date then I'm sure it could work, you just might have to do some digging. Luckily, January is not super popular here so that helps.

I'd start calling venues you like and see if any are available first. I think the problem you'll run into with vendors is that the good ones will be booked or you'll have to pay more for the better ones (that aren't booked because they are so expensive) or settle for not as good vendors. We started planning 19 months out, we are now 12 months out and I've come into contact with a few vendors that were already booked for our day even that far out. I'd just start planning ASAP and get Save the Dates out to out of state/town guests after you book a venue.

Oh boy. I'm shivering just thinking about being in Minnesota in January! A nice intimate indoor wedding can definitely be olanned in 6 months. Especially if you have enough cash at hand.

How hard it will be depends a lot on the size of your guest list. If you have 300 people, you'll need a dedicated wedding venue, and those often book fast (although you may be able to get onto a waiting list, especially if you can be flexible about your date). But for a small wedding, you have a lot more choices--restaurants, hotels, community centers, etc.

Hello! January bride here! I've been engaged and planning my Jan. wedding for over a year and am still not done so the thought of doing it all in 6 months makes me nervous for you!

However, if you go with a smaller guest list, smaller budget to make it easier on everyone I think its totally do-able. I'd find a venue ASAP. January isn't a super popular month to get married so I think you should still hopefully have a few places to pick through. I'd definitely get the ball rolling though as far as making decisions because once the fall and the holidays come time is going to fly faster than it already is!

Start looking at venues. We started planning our September wedding with only three months to plan and so far everything's coming together so it's doable.

Had a friend plan a winter wedding. Tens of thousands. Huge winter storm came and they ended up having a court house wedding with very few in attendance right before the storm. Definitely get wedding insurance.

Okay well I too live in Minnesota and think a winter wedding would be so awesome for pictures and you could do so many fun things with a winter theme. That being said, I'd never be able to do it myself as I had a cousin have a wedding between Christmas and New Years and there was a big snow storm and only like 20% of her guests were able to make it. Are a large % of your guests local? It's too risky for me (or I worry too much).

From a timing perspective I had 7 months to plan my wedding (in 16 days so during the more popular summer) and that was more than enough time. You are fine time-wise if you find your key vendors soon~

Minnesota bride here and no one really wants to get married in January, here, lol, so you should be able to get a venue. The only issue I would see is weather: a snowstorm could derail your plans. Where are you thinking of getting married? Not outside, I hope!!

I am a MN bride here as well, and personally I wouldnt get married in Jan. You never know how the weather will be! That being said I know Nov to April is way cheaper as far as venues go bc not alot of people are willing to tempt the weather. I do think like pp mentioned if able to a Jan, a snow white wedding would be gorgeous!

January bride up in here! I literally just got engaged in April, and we’ve seen to be doing everything on time we just sent out our Save the Dates and we have our venue already which is a plus cause the dates were pretty much available cause it’s an off wedding season so many options! I’m so ready also we’ve been together for 5 years and we feel ready and we are doing the old fashioned way also moving together right after the wedding! You can do it! It’s possible just don’t pile things up all at once there’s still enough time! Just don’t take too much time!

You can plan a wedding in any amount of time if your budget is high enough. Being able to plan in 6 months depends largely on your budget, guest list, and what kind of wedding you want. I wouldn't think that you'll have the hardest time finding a wedding venue in January in MN.

Hi Sierra! Welcome to the WeddingWire Community! Smiley ring This is certainly doable; it just comes down to what vision you aspire to achieve along with your budgeted amount and of course the amount of guests you plan to invite! Are you thinking of having a small or more medium-sized ceremony?

The current guest list sits at about 140, and I see about 100 of those people coming so small / medium i suppose!
