Ivory vs white men’s shirts

MrsGtoBe, on January 15, 2018 at 10:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23
So my wedding dress is ivory and we are having a hard time deciding if the men should wear white or ivory undershirts. What did everyone else do? Men’s Wearhouse recommended ivory but their ivory undershirt looked very yellow and dingy. But I don’t think stark white is the way to go either because I don’t want it to make my dress look yellow. Help!

Ivory for the groom for sure. My bridal shop always recommends it. I believe it’s because the white will make your dress look dingy since it’s not the same shade.

I disagree with the pp. The white shirt looked way better with H’s and the GM’s gray suits than the ivory shirt at Men’s Warehouse. It also did NOT make my ivory dress look dirty. I have not figured out how to post pictures on the new WW, but it was no contest. I would 100% recommend a white shirt over ivory at MW.

I presume you are actually taking about shirts, not undershirts.

If you read any credible source on men's formal wear, they will tell you that the men should wear white shirts with a tuxedo. This whole ivory thing from Mens Wearhouse needs to be ignored.

A white shirt does not make an ivory dress look dingy. It makes it look ivory.

The ivory shirt from Mens Wearhouse will look dingy. People expect to see a white shirt with a tuxedo.

We were just at Mens Warehouse today and the sale lady told us to go with white even tho my dress is ivory. Their ivory is a very yellow ivory and as others have said looks dingy!

As Muriel said, men wear white shirts with tuxedos. My dress was ivory, his shirt was white. It would have looked strange if his shirt was ivory.

MW told me the same thing. My dress is ivory but their ivory shirts are so so yellow and dark! We got white shirts for DH and his GM to wear with their suits and it looked great. They didn't look any different from my dress in pics.

That was my first reaction too to their shirts! I was like "no way my ivory dress is that yellow!" Was your dress a white ivory though or a standard creme ivory?

I wouldn’t do the ivory shirt if it looks that yucky. Do they have a shirt that is just slightly off-white, cream maybe?

My dress is ivory and the men will wear ivory (even our table clothes are ivory) because I will not look dirty or dingy next to anyone in white. That being said, we are getting our suits from Jos A Banks and they have a lovely grey suit that's a warmer grey instead of the cool blue tone grey.

You can always decline to rent shirts from MW and just go buy one from a department store in the color you like. That is what we are doing, I don't like the shirts that are there and wanted a gray shirt so we just cut it out of the rental and went to JC Penney and got the ones we like.

FH was in a friend's wedding recently where the bride wore her ivory wedding gown and her H picked white shirts for himself and the GM - she was scared but i honestly couldnt tell the difference, not even in person let alone pictures, and the GM clothes were navy pants and white shirt and suspenders with bow ties so the shirt was suuuuuuuuuuuper visible.

typically if you want it to go you would pick ivory/ivory, but its entirely up to you and if you get white, its not that noticeable a difference. i wouldnt concern myself with it Smiley smile

This is a follow up i guess what i didnt notice is that you said Men's Warehouse. My friend rented a suit from another mens store and the white did not work. Ivory worked best. I haven't seen the Men's Warehouse shirts so i guess its safe to say its not a "one size fits all" kind of thing. I would think if the shirt is obviously yellow-ish that it won't work. Many dresses that are ivory look white anyway.

Your dress won't look yellow/dingy next to a white shirt. A lot of ivory shirts can look yellowish and it's definitely noticeable next to other guests in white shirts. An ivory dress doesn't usually give off a very noticeable tinge, it just looks like a wedding dress. Get the white shirts, it'll look fine

My dress was ivory/champagne, H wore an ivory shirt (by his choice-not because my dress was ivory) and the GMs wore white, just because we told them "wear a white shirt you already have". It looked totally fine in person and in pro photos. I promise you and everyone else won't notice a difference.

While my pics are just from my guests since I don't have my pro pics back, I think even in these pics there's no way I or my dress looks "dirty or dingy" next to my DH wearing a white shirt. In fact, the difference is barely perceptible. Further, the type of fabric will make a difference as well. Ivory silk will look different than ivory polyester.

I have to completely agree! I had the same dilemma, but we chose white for the tuxes and my dress is ivory. Personally, now I’m not sure why ivory dress shirts are even a thing. 😳

I think it was a standard ivory.
