Ivory dress, white shirts? Anxious.

Emilie, on March 29, 2018 at 7:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19
Hi guys! I’m a pretty anxious person, first of all. My dress is ivory, which I never wanted, but loved when I tried it on - especially because it was so hard to even tell it wasn’t just white. Now my FH and his groomsmen are planning to rent suits with white shirts, and I’m terrified I’ll look totally yellow next to them. Anyone have victory stories? Charcoal suit, and FH will have an ivory tie, while groomsmen will wear lilac ties (our color). Everyone will have a jacket most of the time, and suit-matching vests. So maybe it won’t matter so much? Someone please reassure me I won’t look yellow. This is a legit worry for me, though it’s a detail, and like all worries it surfaced at like midnight last night. Go figure! xD

White shirts look best next to an ivory dress. Men’s ivory shirts are usually a dark ivory. You’re making the right choice with white shirts for the men

I am having this concern as well-My dress is ivory with a champagne underlay, but I think I am opting for my FH and groomsmen to wear white because the men's ivory shirts were super dark and almost yellow looking. I think you are heading in the right direction!

White shirts are far better looking than ivory. The color another person us wearing won't make your dress look anything other than what it is. My daughter's dress was a almond color and ivory, beautiful and creamy. Her husband wore a white shirt with a tie that was close in color to her dress. The groomsmen also wore white shirts with navy ties

White shirts are the best color to put next to a ivory. It won't make your dress look yellow especially if they are wearing jackets over their shirts.

They will look just fine. Everything will look bright and fresh, and the suit/vest/tie combo will cover A LOT of the shirt.

Same here. The woman at the Tux place suggested white for them, although I am in ivory. She said sometimes ivory mens dress shirts can appear dingy. I had the same worries, originally. My flower girls are in ivory dresses, too, but the ring bearers are in white.

This is what we are going with as well. My dress is an ivory over a light blush, and my FH will be wearing a white shirt. Our sales associate at Men's Wearhouse even said not to go with an ivory shirt because they tend to look more yellow. Usually the ivory shirts are very dark and kinda dingy looking, but the ivory on a dress just looks more like a lighter, off-white color.

You’ll look perfect! my dress is ivory & my fh & groomsmen shirts are all white. the ivory for them looked so yellow so white worked best. if there is a hint of difference it’s okay bc ties and everything else will pop more. it’ll be great!

This is a great post. My FH wants a white linen suit and I have an ivory dress with a champagne underlay and I had the same worry.

Thank you all SO much for your replies! I’ve been really worrying about this since last night. I know it’s a small detail, but weddings are made up of small details that come together beautifully! This makes me much more confident! Smiley smile

We are doing the same thing (me in an ivory dress, guys in white shirts). It's good to hear all the reassurance that it will look OK.

I've always been told that his shirt should be the same shade/one shade darker than your dress. Or else you could look 'dirty' even though it's ivory. My dress is a nude sheath with ivory lace.

No one else's clothing has the power to make your clothing look dirty. Ivory and nude are their own colors not dirty whites. The men should wear clothing that is attractive on them. In the vast majority of the time white shirts look better on the people wearing them

There are hundreds of threads on this topic online, many with pictures.

Your ivory dress will look ivory next to white, not dirty or dingy.

Most ivory shirts have an unattractive yellow undertone.

Agree with others about no need to worry. It is standard for the man to wear a white shirt with his suit/tux regardless the color of the bride's dress and doing so will not diminish the bride's dress. My dress was an ivory silk chiffon; DH wore a white shirt with his tux.

Most white and ivory are not different enough that most people will notice in the first place
