IUD and weight gain?

Jacy, on February 15, 2017 at 9:46 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 45

So I've gone to countless doctors and they've all sworn you cannot gain weight due to a IUD. I've gained close to 35 lbs since I've had mine inserted (1year ago) and this is the first time I've ever had to worry about my weight. No diet or lifestyle change. I'm so terrified to get on the pill due to weight gain, acne, and well it not being as effective as an IUD. Any one else experience weight gain with an IUD?

I actually have, I'm a college student so I wasn't certain if the weight gain was from stress and poor eating (although I eat very healthy 3/4 of the time) but I'm honestly starting to believe it's the IUD. I've gained ~40 lbs since I had it inserted 3 years ago. I can only take the mini pill or progesterone only bc's and I wanted a more effective option but I'm starting to second guess it being worth it

What IUD are you using? I've had the mirena about a year and a half now and I love it. Have had no problems with weight gain.. the thing is, you physically cannot GAIN WEIGHT if you are not eating more than normal, as in more calories - what may be happening is water retention. Though 40 pounds could not be caused by water retention. I mean your body is not magically making calories on it's own and storing them as fat. I'd keep a food log and watching how many calories you're actually taking in.

If your IUD is a hormonal one, it is possible. Your hormones go out of wack, your body chemistry changes and weight gain can definitely happen.

There is only one IUD that's non-hormonal and it's a copper IUD. I can't remember the name.

MrsMayorca - the copper one is paraguard.

I gained weight on the pill but recently switched to an IUD...it has less reported weight gain side effects but I suppose anything is possible.

I am very, very sensitive to hormones and basically lost my mind on birth control. I reached out to my doctors many times with my concerns and all of them told me it wasn't related, or "everybody handles it differently," or "I just need time to adjust." Which all just made me feel even worse. I googled a very broad statement of what was going on with me and found pages upon pages of people saying the exact same thing as me and doctors saying the same thing to them.

I'm not a medical professional, so this could be completely incorrect, but I believe doctors can't say certain things about birth control because of the lack of research in how it can effect people.

Ease your mind and just google it.

@Holly, thank you! That one. Lol.

There isn't really good data that suggests that Mirena is associated with weight gain. I had it, and no matter what I did, how I ate, how much I exercised... nothing would budge til I got it removed... then down 10 pounds.

    PS, I'm a doctor.

I was on the depo for 4 years and had gained 35 pounds after I had just lost all of it. I switched to the pill and haven't gained any weight. I have never had acne but once I stopped tanning that's when it started so I'm not sure if it's from the bc or not tanning. I can tell you if you use the pills correctly you will be just fine! FH and I have been together 6 years and have never used protection besides bc and never have had any issues. Even on the pill I'd miss a day and still be fine.

I gained a lot of weight on mirana. Even when I went to the gym and ate relatively well, I couldn't manage to lose any. Since having it out, I stopped gaining at the rate I was, but it's hard to lose 50 pounds.

I've had mirena for a year now and did not notice any initial weight gain. However, recently my scale has been climbing (which I don't think is due to mirena) and I've noticed that with healthy eating and exercise the weight is not coming off nearly as easily as it use to. I'm very active and eat mostly very well.

Weight gain is definitely attributed to the Mirena! I have personal and professional experience.

I've had 2 and I have both lost 20 lbs while I had it and gained more than that back, but I don't think either had anything to do with the Mirena, but rather stress, eating the wrong things and not exercising enough. I would suggest thinking about what else is going on in your life and tracking what you are actually eating. I didn't think my eating habits had changed, but I was burning fewer calories than I thought and wasn't paying attention to how often/how much unhealthy food I was eating, plus grad school and a long commute, which resulted in a large weight gain over a few years.

I had skyla for about 8 months and I did gain a few pounds. I didn't know if the weight was from the iud or the fact that I had relocated to Louisiana. But of all the types of bc I've had, losing weight with the iud was the most difficult so I had it removed.

I had mirena for 5 years and have had my paraguard for over 2 years and have not had weight gain with either of them. Has anything else changed in your world that could be leading to weight gain? For instance when FH moved in we both gained like 40 pounds because we got relaxed with our diets and enjoyed eating junk together.

I have the Skyla. Does anyone oppose to switching to the pill? I've always heard it's less effective because of people not taking it on time, but I just hate to takes the chance. I've gotten to where I just trust my IUD so much I'm nervous to switch.

I don't have experience with IUDs but I know weight gain is not a common symptom for Nexplanon. I love this arm implant! I haven't gained weight and I don't get a period anymore. You just change it once every 3 years. The only complaint people have with it is unpredictable bleeding. My doctor told me 1/3 of people stop getting a period while 10% get the implant removed, usually because they just bleed all the time. Most of my friends have had success with it, but it's really unpredictable how it will change your periods.

I definitely have an increased appetite on birth control. I don't gain weight though because I monitor my food intake. I think most people that gain weight on birth control are just eating more - the pill itself doesn't magically make you gain.

I gained a ton of weight on the depo shot so I actually lost weight on the pill (probably because I was no longer getting the shots though). It varies a ton person to person so you really just have to try it. There are tons of different pills so if you're not happy with the IUD get it removed and dabble with some different pills instead. I would say do this sooner rather than later because if you can get it figured out in the next few months you'll still have some time to get back to your goal weight for the wedding Smiley smile

ETA: I said "ton" a ton sorry not sorry

I've never heard of weight gain with IUD. I've also had mirena two seperate times (after I had my two boys) and I have had no problems with weight gain. Maybe its a hormone in balance? Have you tried talking with your doc?
