Items left behind at venue

meeyuu, on July 3, 2018 at 11:23 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6

I had a day-of coordinator for the wedding. She left a whole bunch of stuff back at the venue, which I noticed the day after the wedding. I emailed both my day-of and the venue coordinator for the items (they were expensive things like brass candelabras and mercury votives) which I received responses saying that they'd look into it. 2 weeks later, I return from my honeymoon overseas, and email them as follow-up -- only for the venue coordinator to state that the contract states that ALL items must be removed right after the reception and they do not keep anything afterward and it gets all thrown out. Who's at fault here? The items left behind in total cost me $500 or so... this is frustrating to say the least, especially since one of the items was my welcome sign that my now-husband constructed himself and it was pretty personal. What can I do?

Is the venue coordinator correct in what they said? Does your contract with them say that all items must be removed, the night of?

What does your contract with your day of coordinator say? Did it specifically say that she is responsible to remove and store all your decor items?

If it's important to you, you can consult a lawyer. Most will give an initial consultation free or at very low cost.

Was it in the day of coordinators job description or contract they would take all items back? Was it in your venue contract you had to take all items after the wedding that night?

Well that is so unfortunate. If it is in your venue contract that everything must be out then sadly, I think you are at fault. My venue contract does state that everything I want to keep must be out of the venue by 1 am so I am making plans to make sure everything is out by 1am as virtually nothing would I want thrown away. I don't think that is uncommon. I would pull your contract with the venue to confirm the verbiage and also check your contract with the DOC to see if the responsibility for taking down/removing decor was explicitly given to the DOC. It may your DOC is at fault if your contract specifically has him/her removing/storing decor. I'm guessing the problem is not with your venue though.

It sounds like you should have called instead of email 😭 it’s pretty standard that you’re stuff needs to be out of there the same day or within 24 hours. For my brothers wedding they had til noon the next day. Your location has other weddings as well and can’t store EVERYONES extras. It really sucks, but looks like you need to read through your contract again to double check.

Check both contracts. If it's in the venue's contract, then they definitely aren't at fault. My venue's contract also states anything I want to keep must be out by 1am the night of the wedding, so I think it's pretty common.

If your DOC's contract states she was in charge of getting it all, then she is at fault, and I would contact her about making up for the lost money and personal items. Make sure you double and triple check those contracts!
