Italy Honeymoon Tips

Kenia, on September 13, 2020 at 1:52 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 6
Hello! I would love to go to a nice beach in Italy for my honeymoon in April. I’ve been looking at Positano on the Amalfi coast. However I’ve been told it is pretty expensive. I basically just want a nice place with lots of culture for me to explore and relax with my new husband especially after a big wedding. Open to other places or ideas! Also tell me how your trip in Italy was.

Italy in general is expensive. FH & I went 6 years ago. We visited Rome & Venice. While we spent more time in Rome as there is significantly more to see & do, we LOVED Venice. We were considering the Amalfi Coast for our honeymoon but might go to Greece instead. You may want to look into a trip where you visit multiple cities so you can experience it all and really absorb the different Italian cultures as it varies from coast
To coast. Their speed train can get you where you want to go quickly.

Oh and I highly recommend a travel agent and planning all your stops before you go! Our travel agent had vouchers for us and it basically meant event was paid for and you just hand it over.

I spent an entire summer in Italy, and I thought most places were relatively cheap. However, the Amalfi Coast tends to be a bit more expensive. I would highly recommend that area though. It’s breathtaking!

There are 2 other islands (Ischia and Procida) that are much cheaper than Capri. You can easily take the ferry boat from Naples to any of these islands.
I agree with Lisa. I think you would enjoy visiting multiple cities to get a feel for Italian culture. My favorite places were Naples, Rome, and Positano!

Italy is wonderful! The Amalfi Coast is beautiful, but know that it is a different type of beach scene than what most people envision. Positano is built up, so depending upon where you stay you may need to climb down a lot of stairs to reach the beach/pier. Also, the beach is not white sand, it’s pebbles. So make sure you pack proper shoes. There’s not a lot of public space on the main beach in Positano so you’ll likely need to buy a day pass to one of the resorts at the beach if you envision laying in the sun listening to the sea. It’s a popular tourist town, so while there are locals with a culture, most locals are working around the clock during tourist season. If you visit after tourist season it gets more difficult to travel from town to town without your own car (which can be difficult to park as a nonresident).

There are some smaller towns along the Amalfi Coast that would enable you to save some money, but the tradeoff will be your time in waiting to catch a bus into the large towns or the price of a taxi between towns. We stayed in Praiano for a couple days on our honeymoon and it was a very lovely town. The bus was much more of a mess than we were expecting and taxis were pretty expensive. Our Airbnb has a nice patio with lounge chairs so we were able to relax at our rental when we didn’t want to deal with transportation to Positano. As for exploring, I think there were only a handful off restaurants and two or three boutiques in Praiano, so not a ton to explore. Positano has little considerably more, but some are a bit of tourist traps.
You may want to look into Cinque Terre. While I have not been it has been highly recommended to me by many friends. It’s a different kind of Italian coastal town. Very picturesque and you can hike between some of the towns.

My favorite place in Italy that I visited was Florence. It was beautiful, lots of culture, shopping, reasonable food, The David, and close by train to other cities.

Italy is very inexpensive for the most part. Though like everywhere, the most touristy places will have inflated prices. You can find local affordable places anywhere if you do your research.
Naples: the most authentic (lines of laundry, ladies chatting from building to building, birth place of pizza) steeped in history, Pompeii and Herculaneum short ride away, Sorrento or Capri are close ferry ride away (Capri can be expensive). 1h15 from Rome if you get the right train.

Rome: The ruins are incredible, short bus ride to costal beaches, Culture everywhere, can be very crowded (though obviously tourism is down right now), has a separate food culture to Naples. 1h30 from Florence.
Florence: Beautiful, art everywhere, steeped in history and romance, birth place of gelato and the Negroni, winding streets, easy access to Pise and Sienna. 2h30 to a town in Cinq Terres or 1h15 from Pise.
Bologna : Food, Food, Food. Nice Porticos, 30mins from Florence.
Venice: Romantic, mysterious, easy to get lost, has a beach on another island (not particularly picturesque), surprises at every turn (came across a sword fight down a dark alley, went back to hotel and found 20 tango dancers). Grab a spritz (2€) and wander the town. Can get crowded at certain hot spots, but you can also avoid crowds by getting lost. Most beautiful exit from a train station ever! Close to Verona, 2h15 from Florence, 1h30 from Bologna.
You could also consider Sicily for both beach and culture, try the Aeolian Islands, Taromina, Syracuse, Catania for Etna views (though I don't recommend going up there, not worth the cost). Sardinia or Corsica (not Italy, but breathtaking and a bit cheaper than other Islands, similar culture).
Fly in to one city and out the other. Train tickets are inexpensive (15-20€ from major city to major city ie: 1h train ride = 15€). Trains are clean, modern and run on time plus the scenery is lovely.
