Italy Honeymoon Planning = Overwhelming

I was wondering if anyone has planned a European honeymoon. My fiance and I know for sure we want to see Italy, but we are also considering visiting other parts of Europe. I did some research and I'm starting to feel overwhelmed. I'm thinking it may reduce stress to stick with just Italy (after all, a honeymoon should be fun and relaxing, right?). Has anyone been to Italy? How did you go about planning it? Is it worthwhile to use a travel agent? I've never used sites like tripadvisor or travelocity, are they any good?

Additionally, we registered on one of those honeymoon sites so people can pay for parts of our honeymoon instead of a gift or money. What are your thoughts about those types of registries?

ETA: Should I start learning some basic Italian? How well are Americans received in Italy? (I mean... most European countries don't seem to like Americans, but what exactly can I expect?)

We were in Italy last summer and visited Rome, Florence, Sienna and a few other Tuscan spots over a 10 day period. It wasn't too hectic and we planned everything ourselves. Just remember that Italy gets very quiet (and many places close) during the month of August for three weeks for summer holidays. It also get really, really hot during the summer months but don't let that discourage you, it is an absolutely amazing country with incredible history.

Italy is a perfect honeymoon destination. Last year I visited Italy and it was fun. Everywhere we were treated with respect. We took the services from Benvenuto Limos, to travel exciting shore excursions. The food here is awesome. Rome, Florence and Venice are my personal favorite cities to visit.

For our first Europe trip, we stuck to an English speaking country and staying within one city. We are also considering Italy as well for our Honeymoon, but we would probably stick to 2-3 cities to explore as to not to take away from the relaxation of the vacation. From what I've heard from friends, the language was not a problem in touristy areas! Groupon currently has some good Italy deals. I'm tempted to book it for the middle year between our engagement year and wedding year, lol!

According to one of my professors (who did all his dissertation work in Venice) you should go to Venice, never have squid ink pasta (apparently it's considered a delicacy), and NEVER WEAR ALL BLACK. They still have a huge thing against fascism there, and all black is what fascists wear. He said he saw a priest almost beaten to a pulp because he took the little white piece out of his collar for a minute. Also, the mafia is very real and they can be very obvious depending on where you go.

As for where to go and logistics and all that, look at Groupon. They've got some solid deals, and it's a good idea template if you don't want to book through them.

We're thinking about the Amalfi Coast for ours! We want to do something more relaxing than our Iceland trip, which focused more on outdoor activities.

We've found out that Italian isn't strictly necessary but is much appreciated! I've been doing Duolingo and its a fun way to do something for the honeymoon while we countdown the days!

I realize this was first posted 8 years ago (😲) but I found the replies so helpful! My fiancé and I are planning a trip to Italy for our honeymoon and I have no idea where to begin. We've only ever traveled in the states so it's a little overwhelming. Appreciate the advice from everyone!
