Issues with Caterer

Rachel, on March 6, 2020 at 6:19 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6

Hi! We're getting married on June 20th and after having our tasting my fiance and I are less than ecstatic with our caterer.

In October we attended a wedding they happened to be catering so we were so excited when we figured that out! We figured this would be a great way to figure out if we wanted to go with the same items or switch it up and try something new. The hors d'oeuvres were amazing, the servers were fabulous and the bar was moving quickly. Come dinner time though, things changed. The food on the buffet was not hot but warm and the food was not seasoned and was very bland so we were very concerned. A few days after the wedding we informed the caterer of our concerns and they said we'd move our tasting up to January so they could show us the quality of their food and knock out our worries. We figured this could be an isolated incident because they have 5 stars on wedding wire and the knot.

Our tasting went pretty well and lessened our worries about the taste but they heated the food in our microwave so it wasn't hot. I reached out to them after the tasting to confirm our menu and again, voice concerns about the temperature of the food. They said there wouldn't be issues but I'm really starting to worry the food won't be good and I'd reallllly like to try to get out of the contract and find a new caterer. I know that's probably not the best idea because our wedding is so soon but I just don't trust these caterers to deliver the experience I'm hoping for. I'm also worried I'm becoming a difficult client but when I'm paying nearly $10k for catering I expect my concerns to be heard and addressed.

Have any of you had issues with your caterer? What did you do to make sure the food at your wedding was up to your standards without making your caterer hate you? Thank you in advance for your help!!!

I would ask you DOC to stay on top of that prior to them serving.

Good idea - I'll make sure she does that. Thanks!

I would also create a plan of contingency. Here's the bottom line: you're a paying customer and if you have concerns right now, then the red flags aren't going to lessen their effect for your day especially if you've already addressed your concerns and you weren't satisfied with the response. Review your options, go back over your contract to see what, if any, the penalties might be. June is a few months away and you don't want to wait until the absolute last minute and still be just as dissatisfied.

Your concerns are valid. Have you gone back and looked at other online reviews? It's always better to have a contingency plan than have a celebration where you are disappointed in the product and know you could've prevented it.

If you are doing a buffet, I would hope that having sternos would help resolve the heat problem.

Did the company tell you how they are assuring you that you won't have the same problems?

I was going to say - it's difficult to have boiling food on a buffet. Every buffet that I've gone to the food gets med-warm. But, I never have to blow on my food or anything. I'd ask some others about how their food temp was at their wedding. I'm not sure if your expectation is realistic or not. "Hot" can be relative to people. Hmmm....

I think these concerns are valid, but.... logistically, it's hard to keep food hot at a buffet. If you want guests to have piping hot food, like it just came out of the oven you may have to switch gears to a plated dinner. I don't know what else you can tell your caterer. Maybe begin searching for another than can help you on short notice and terminate the contract with your current caterer?
