Is weather a deciding factor in booking a date?

Maria, on September 9, 2019 at 8:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 21

Hello all!

I am getting married in October 2020 and right now I am beyond stuck between an early October wedding or an October 31st wedding. I reside in NYC and I am wondering if I should just go with my gut on the 31st knowing that the weather may be freezing, rainy or potentially - warm. My parents are hoping for an early October, but I have been so set on the the 31st.

Both venues I am deciding between are in the park, but is this something that should throw my initial "vision" off?

I told my parents I would use a decision maker app in terms of the date but for now I am aiming to go with the 31st. Is it risky in terms of the weather and my guests???? It's just supposed to be fun!! Smiley smile Any advice is welcome Smiley heart

Personally I considered the weather when we picked our date. I wanted to be comfortable and I wanted my guests to be comfortable as well but if your heart is set on a date then go with it.

I considered weather but at the end of the day even the predictions for weather could be off. Things fluctuate all the time.

Unless you’re having an outdoor wedding or expecting extreme weather like a blizzard or a hurricane, I don’t think it matters all that much. Weather is too unpredictable to plan around.

Agreed with PP. Weather can be so unpredictable. If it just rain/cold, I wouldn't base my decision off that. If it was January then I could see.

We chose a December date, knowing that we could run into a gloomy and rainy day. Or we could get one of those freak 90 degree days. Either way we didn't care, we just wanted to get married and spend the day with those we love.

I would just have a back up plan incase inclement weather decides to pop up. Maybe look into canopy rentals. Like pp said, weather is too unpredictable to really plan around.

The venues are both in the park and happen to be cafe/restaurants. One of them is more spacious with a lot of indoor space and does not require a tent. The #1 pick, however, is half outdoors with indoor space as well. They set up their own tent(in the garden) from end of Sept thru May. I suppose I am overthinking/ overwhelmed at this point. It is true though that at any time of year weather is - unpredictable! I appreciate all of the feedback Smiley smile

You’ll just have to be open to having an indoor plan B

I am in CT and we are having our wedding in November. The thought of crazy weather has definitely crossed my mind since it can snow, rain, or be a warm day! I’d go with your date you want, they will have fun no matter what date you pick 😊

Hi! I don't know where you're from but at least here in PR all throughout July, August, September and October we're in tropical storm season. My wedding's this year, October 19th since it's our boyfriend/girlfriend anniversary and it's in a field with some wooden houses around it meaning, outdoors. We took the weather in great consideration since many are still shaken from Hurricane Maria, until today it looks like it will be okay but we still have to check daily and weekly the weather forecast in advance so we can know if in an emergency case we need to change anything. Tropical storms here are forming waaaaaaaaaaay too fast to the point they reach storm warning and some get hurricane warning in 2 days or less, so like it or not we have to be at least 95% sure there wont be any natural disasters our way. I think you should take consideration of the weather, but also reach the goal you and your spouse want to reach. If it's the theme/climate/way you guys want your wedding to go by, go by your first comfortable guess but also show you're taking that into consideration with the weather of wherever you're from. Maybe that can calm your parents and calm some guests, besides maybe that day the weather will be completely spectacular and you'll have everything how you wanted it. Trust in it 💙

One of my good friends got married two years ago in the end of October and it was really hot. Surprisingly the ceremony was held outdoors and literally everyone was sweating just from sitting outside for 30 minutes. That being said, you never know what you'll get with this crazy NY weather so go with whatever your heart is telling you!

I know October 31st in NYC can be cold. You don’t want your guests to be cold. I would maybe consider having it inside with a nice view around this time

Late October is cold here in PA.. I wouldn't want to be outside for a whole wedding unless you're going to accommodate with a tent and heating lamps (which it seems you said the one venue does). I did consider the weather being too cold, and that is why I picked early October for an outdoor ceremony. They high says 70 and the low is well very low (50s) so far. You can't predict rain though!

Weather permitting, we will have a VERY quick ceremony outside, but as of now we simply will be just having the reception "party" at the venue as we may have an intimate ceremony at a church before.

I am loving all of your comments by the way! thank you for all of the wonderful guidance!

I wouldn’t be too concerned about the weather it will probably be on the chilly side (i live in RI) so weathers about the same here at that time.. As long as you have tents set up I wouldn’t worry about rain and you can always get space heaters if you’re worried it’s going to be too cold !!

I considered the weather when I picked the month (off season prices, but April so I have the best chance it might actually be nice 🤞) honestly, with the north east it could be cold and miserable at any time in October (grew up in Vermont) so I’d say go with your gut and just make sure you have a warm indoor option in case it’s snowy and/or freezing.

As far as you date goes, October in NY isn't really freezing just yet. I am getting married in 5 weeks and I think October is a great month. Not too cold, not too hot. You're issue would be rain. So any venue you look at just be sure there is a backup plan to your outdoor wedding should weather impact you day. Rain usually won't stop people from coming like snow will.

Side note, i LOVE the idea of a halloween wedding. If that's what you want I say go for it. You'll find so much fun decor and cool ideas.

I think any date has pros and cons, especially when wanting an outdoor venue. We chose October for sentimental reasons, but also because the heat in Virginia should let up by then. Of course that means we'll still be in hurricane season so it's a crap shoot. I would recommend going with your gut, but plan for the mother nature.

Does the venue have an indoor space for ceremony & reception? Then I think you are fine. We considered weather so we picked July and it still rained A TON on our day and we had to move indoors.
