Is this too sheer?

Ngoc, on March 26, 2021 at 5:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
I received my pictures of my custom gown design today and it’s lovely, but the sheath base dress is more sheer than I was expecting. I love how it looks with an overskirt, but I’m afraid the base dress will be too sheer. It slipped my mind to ask the vendor to do a chantilly lace inner layer during the design process and they won’t do it now.Is this too sheer? 1

My options now are:
1. Buy chantilly lace and have a local tailor add the layer on the inside. The gown has 3 layers of tulle so the chantilly lace pattern won’t be too obvious, but it’ll make the gown less sheer. It’s going to cost $50 for the lace from Amazon and $100-$150 for a tailor to fix it. Issue here is I don’t have a lot of time to find nice lace patterns and such and wait for shipping. And there’s risk that the dress will get messed during the alternation.
2. Just go with what here and hopefully nude undergarments will do. I’m doing an elopement without any guests, so the sheerness may not come through in photos and videos anyway. They did put ample lace appliqué throughout. However, since no guests will be present, I’ll likely be sharing photos more broadly.
Let me know what you think. Thanks!

It depends on your comfort level. It's difficult to judge on the mannequin. A local seamstress will have fabric of their own to work with. If yo go that route, they would add a solid opaque layer to the inside so you don't have to track down specific lace. A reputable seamstress will not damage the dress

Or just leave it as is would be least stressful

You do not need another lace layer. Try on bra-slipsto go fromthe top edge of your bra, the length of your dress, in nylon tricot. A lot of people jump right to sewn-together layers, rather than a separate slip.
In fact, one of the jobs of a slip is to keep your body and swear and oils and skin bits away from fancy fabrics that can never be washed, while the slip layer can be taken off, or insnapped, and washed in a laundry detergent. A lot of people with no slip layer, their multilayer gown slides between their legs a ways when sitting, and adheres to any swear on either side of your thighs, in the middle of your breasts. With an absorbant slip, the still dry dress slides over the slip with ease, with no sign of how sweaty you are. If where you are marrying is hot and humid, but a second slip to change it after 3 hours, feel very fresh and dry again.

Depends entirely on your comfort level. I don't think it's too sheer, as I can't see the bottom edge of the mannequin - I think your shape/silhouette will be visible, but I don't think it would be in an distasteful way. It could end up looking very ethereal.

Are you able to try the dress on with enough time to make a decision?

Cutting really close, but I’m one month away and the vendor is mailing it next week, so I’ll have it about 2 weeks before my wedding. The tailor needs 10 days, so I need to make a decision pretty much immediately after I receive it.

Agreed on the ethereal look if I can pull it off. I was really inspired by the Mira Zwillinger designs: https://www.mirazwillinger.com/dress/leona/

I just want to say that dress is GORGEOUS! I agree with the idea of maybe trying to find a slip if you aren’t comfortable so you don’t have to stress over ordering and sewing in another layer. Once you get the dress maybe trying taking photos in different lighting to see if you feel you need more?

I don’t think it’s too sheer especially for an elopement! Pretty dress.

Thanks! I’ll distract myself with other projects like shoe decor while I wait for the dress to try on first. The slip idea is not bad. I was contemplating a DIY lace skirt slip to go under since I couldn’t find a sheerish one (or thin enough waistband) that would allow me to keep the gradient effect from the sheer layers
