Is this song overdone as a first dance?

Judi, on September 12, 2016 at 3:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

"shut up and dance with me" is a special song for FH and I and it makes us laugh and dance and just makes sense to us, BUT, since I never listen to popular radio (wow, way to sound so hipster but its more of a nerd thing) I didnt realize how ridiculously overplayed it is until I started looking at it as a wedding song - Would it be lame to use the song of the year? Apparently one of the websites called it the new chicken dance, that's how much of a wedding staple it is

Is this true?

Yes, its overplayed but I still like it.

I wouldn't use it as a meaningful first dance song but if you just want to dance around all willy nilly, go for it.

Was just at a wedding this past weekend which had a DJ, and this song was not played. So, maybe not? Your wedding is still a while away, "popular" songs change so quickly. If you want to dance to it, go right ahead! By October next year it will not be on the radio as much (or at all) and people will not be sick of hearing it, I think...

FH and I are using it, but not for our first dance. It's after all the wedding stuff is done and we want everyone to get up and dance with us.

It's overplayed, but who cares, if that's what you want, go for it

I don't think it's overplayed as a "first dance" because most people go with a slower song for that, but it is super duper overplayed at weddings, in general, yes.

Totally overplayed at weddings, but I am on my feet jumping around to it EVERY. TIME. It just brings a smile to my face.

As PPs have said, most first dance songs are slow, but they don't HAVE to be. I considered "Something I Need" by onerepublic (starts slow, gets faster), but decided I do want that slow dance moment.

It's definitely overplayed in general, but I still love it. I would honestly probably struggle to just watch you guys dance to it because I like it so much haha.

Certainly not the most traditional first dance song, but I don't see anything wrong with that.

Who cares if it's overplayed. This is one of those things that no one will care about. If it's the song the two of you want, then use it.

If that's what you want then do it! I'm using probably the most overplayed father/daugher dance song "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts but who cares?! We love that song

There's a really great, slow acoustic cover of "shut up and dance with me" by Anchor + Bell - you can find it on Spotify. It may be a cool twist on the song to make it feel original and the right speed for your first dance!

It's totally not the norm so I love it! However, you could always use it as your entrance song at the reception!

We're going to play it. We both listen to country music (and not the pop country) but I love this song! We're not using it as the first dance though

They played it at my wedding and guess what, everyone was up and grooving. It's a fun song, if you like it who cares if it's overplayed?

Well, I don't think it's as common as the chicken dance. And hopefully a year from now at your wedding it will be played less often on the radio if that helps. If it's an important song to you two, I think that's the most important thing so don't sacrifice "your song" for it's perceived popularity. Songs like that are a hit on the radio for a couple months, until the next big hit takes it's place so it won't be overplayed forever. Personally, it's not one of my favorite songs, but when I heard Kina Grannis do a slower cover version of it - omg amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnNKdjvcJKk

I wouldn't play it for a first dance...it's too upbeat..

But maybe as an after dinner 'first song' to get people dancing!
