I was messaging a potential resort on here about getting married on the beach and asked them what the next steps were and they told me they require a deposit and then they will discuss everything on the contract with me, is this normal?

No it’s not normal. I never heard of deposit first then contract. Usually you get to meet with vendor and discuss the venue/what they offer/tour of the venue/budget etc and what you want for your wedding. Once you have decided that this is your venue then you talk about the contract and deposit to hold your date. I would ask if you can meet first to check out the venue to see what they have to do offer for your wedding and what you want for your wedding before making a deposit. Also discuss the contract before making a deposit. You don’t want to make a deposit first and be trapped into a contract and venue that you may not want. It will be kind of hard to get out it if you are not happy with a venue that you don’t want
