Is this makeup artist charging too much??

Mrs. Pechie, on November 8, 2013 at 7:15 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

Hey ladies! I need to your help... I found a makeup artist whose work I think is gorgeous. However, when I called yesterday to inquire on whether she has my date available, she said yes and that makeup on my date would be $165, a trial would be $65, it's 70 cents per mile from her house to mine, if I want my hair done it'll be $105 and if she's traveling to me then she requires that I have at least 2 other girls getting their makeup done and that will be another $75 per girl... Is this average?? Or are her prices pretty high? I almost put a deposit down yesterday but figured I'd research a little before I commit. Help!!

That's similar to mine. Mine is charging $100/person, travel ($50), minimum of three artists. Hair will be by someone else.

I think that may be a little toward the high end, but it doesn't sound crazy to me. It really depends on your area as well. I live in Chicago, and my makeup (airbrushing) and hair will be $350 total. It's $170 for each additional girl. Also, I paid $150 for a trial. It was definitely on the high end of my budget, but it's worth it to me.

It's a little on the high end, but if she's as amazing as you say then... i don't think it's about right.

the MUA i'm thinking of hiring charged me $85 for our trial last weekend for my engagement photos. and day of makeup application is going to run at least $110. for airbrush.

my hair stylist charged me $75 for our trial last weekend for engagements, and day of is $150.

both of them are highly rated in the austin area. featured on tons of lists, including the knots best of for this year and previous years. i was sooo super happy with what they did. i think it's worth it for my day. lol.

oh, and i haven't talked to them about travel fees yet since my wedding is still so far away. they're base prices might go up, and then idk what travel fees would be on top of that. so idk, we'll see.

It's about right. It's your face; it's a once in a lifetime thing. Go for it.

Oh that definitely sounds about right. I'd pay whatever it takes for a great makeup artist.

I agree that's about high-average. Mine is $85 for airbrush and $65 for regular, for her to come to us, but that was an awesome deal.

Have you checked out other MUAs in your area to compare? It seems fairly comparable to the MUA I'm using.

    Bride: $125

    Bride Trial: $60

Bridesmaids: $65-90 (depending on traditional vs airbrush)

    Jr Bridesmaids: $50

I don't have to pay a travel fee because our location is very close to her.

I agree with Catherine. From my research, that sounds like the high average end of the spectrum.

It really depends on location. You won't pay the same price for the same service in NYC vs Wyoming probably.

For where I am that is really high.. At the coast, I will be paying 125 for hair, make up and to get my tattoo covered for the day.. She will also come to me.. But it's your one day to look perfect, so I think what you were quoted sounds reasonable.. Except for the mileage, I think that should be included..

I'm a MUA and that's about right! I'm not doing my own makeup though. I want to feel pampered on my wedding day.

Her prices are descent. Not all makeup artists charge the same price. I own a legit business which is somewhat rare in the on-location beauty industry. I have to pay large amounts of taxes for my LLC, a good amount of money towards makeup and disposable products for each appointment.

I personally think the way you look is one of the biggest investments on your wedding day since that is how you will forever be remembered by your guests and in your pictures. I wouldn't skimp on quality for the price.

Some other determining factors in price are location, skill of the artist, demand of the artist and distance from your location.

I hope that helps and good luck!

The makeup price seems a little high...mine is charging me $100 for air-brush makeup (day of wedding) and then $150 for hair. Also, mine does not require a minimum of people in order to travel...she would travel even if it was just me getting my hair and makeup done.

There are just too many variables and pricing will be different from artist to artist and state to state. You need to be sure to "investigate" the artist by asking questions.

Where did she receive her education and training? How long has she been a makeup artist? Look at her portfolio and contact references.

Here are some tips on hiring a makeup artist for your wedding.

and understanding what goes into pricing of makeup services:

The only thing you mentioned that I don't like is that she requires you to have 2 more people. I know some do that and I avoided those MUA.

    Otherwise, the pricing is fine.
