Is this a weird father-daughter dance song?

rae, on April 27, 2013 at 1:49 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

I asked my dad to choose our song and he chose "As Time Goes By." At first I was excited--he and I watched Casablanca a lot when I was little and then he encouraged me to learn to play it on the piano... But when I think of the lyrics more carefully, I wonder if the song is appropriate?? Some phrases are timeless, but then there's this...

"And when two lovers woo /They still say, "I love you." /On that you can rely /No matter what the future brings /As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs /Never out of date. /Hearts full of passion /Jealousy and hate. /Woman needs man /And man must have his mate /That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story /A fight for love and glory /A case of do or die./The world will always welcome lovers /As time goes by."

Thoughts?

Maybe edit that part out? I'm sure not a lot of guests have that song memorized :/ no one will know the diff. Or possibly just use the instrumental to it????

I don't think you need to take the words literally. If the song means something to the two of you then it is perfect. I think it is super cute that he picked it! I wish my Dad was still here so he could pick a song for us to dance to. Be super grateful. you are a very lucky girl for being so close to your Dad that he is willing to pick a song. Just enjoy!

I think most songs used have a little "lover" reference in them. I don't think most people will notice. If you're worried, you could have the dj announce it has a special meaning to you both (what you told us).

DH and his mom danced to "nothing will change this love" and it has the line "you're the girl of my dreams..." in it. It was fine. We danced to "in my life" which has a slight romantic vibe. No one gave us funny looks Smiley smile

I don't think you need to worry about it too much. If it was one of those grinding type of songs... I'd suggest you run away from it. He's just trying to relive the memories of you. And he might be saying "I know you're not daddy's little girl anymore, now you're FH's gal"...

I would say... go with it!

Personally, because it's a song that is important to both you and your dad I don't think it would be a problem. I think it sounds really sweet.
