Is this a lot for a tux rental?

Elizabeth, on April 4, 2021 at 11:12 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
My FH agreed to be in a friend's wedding party this summer. He just got the email to rent a tux, and it is going to cost $300 all in. We are a little taken abavk because the wedding is rather modest--there is nothing wrong with a modest wedding, but why the $300 tux for groomsmen?? Is there any way my FH can politely ask to rent a tux for less or wear one he already owns? He doesnt want to be rude, but I don't want to spend so much on a tux for one wedding when we have so many others we are trying to go to (which I already posted about)

I have no idea why tux rentals are so expensive. I thought bridesmaids having to spend $100+ on a dress they will only wear once was annoying, but then realized tux rentals cost even more and you don't even get to keep the tux.

My husband was the best man in a wedding and the tux rental was a little over $200. This included jacket, shirt, vest, pants, suspenders, bow tie, pocket square (that is the only part you keep), and awful shoes.

I guess it just really depends on location and designer/store. The rental for our guys was $200 including all the accessories (shoes, ties, cufflinks, etc). Does the $300 include accessories or is it just the tux by itself?? If it's just the tux, I agree that it's a bit pricey. In all honesty, maybe it's just me, but I don't think it would be rude to ask for the possibility of an alternative.

Be honest and let them know to see if they'd be willing and able to work with you. Either that or pay the $300. Hopefully it won't result in having to step down from the wedding party. Good luck with whichever is decided.

It does seem like a lot. My fiancé was in a wedding a couple years ago and his rental was $250. He’s the best man in a wedding in a couple months and I think he said $200. We are going to try to keep ours at $200. I think you should be honest with the couple and let them know your concerns. I personally don’t think it’s right to ask fo wear a different tux. The couple should have asked your budget ahead of time, too.

That does seem to be on the high end. Our tux rentals (for our very formal wedding) were $200 a person, and this included everything such as accessories, cufflinks, shoes, and all taxes and fees.

I agree that is expensive for a tux and they should have checked with your fiance about budget beforehand, but I don't think it would be right to ask them to change the vision for their wedding. Unfortunately, if he wants to be in the wedding then he's going to have to buy what the couple is asking him to wear.

It seems like a lot. It also depends on where you live and the style of tux they wanted for their wedding. The style of the tux can be very expensive. My guys spent $120 for their tux which includes tux, shoes, vest, tie, cufflinks etc.

I think at this point I would just want the guys to buy a tux! You can always swap out the shirt and bow tie. My dad told me he was a groomsman in several high-budget weddings and wore the same tux to every one because that was the norm, but I don't think people do that as much any more.

Maybe you can get the tux cheaper here on the east coast and travel with it.

I think our groomsmen's tuxes were $150 fifteen years ago. My husband was in a wedding five years ago and it was $225-250 I think.

It doesn't seem outrageous to me, but you can always ask if there is a less expensive alternative that would still fit their wedding party look. It's a little harder with the men than it is with women, who can easily mix and match and still look cohesive. But maybe it's the style or a higher end fabric driving the cost up, and he can get something in the same color, but cheaper.
