Is the photographer is taking too long to edit photos for Save the Dates?

SewBikeLove, on January 2, 2016 at 12:59 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

One photographer (let's call him A) is reasonably priced and is a full-time photographer. A has done work at a family member's wedding an is more traditonal. While the other photographer (B) is a little more pricey and will not include prints. But she is very creative and takes her time when editing photos. Before deciding on B to do my wedding I thought I'd try her out with our STDs/engagement photos. We paid $130 up for about 3 hours. She was very patient with us. That was on 12/6/15 and I was planning to send the STDs this month. She is actually a friend of my sister so I kind of feel like its favor or something. B is a PT photographer and has another job that probably comes first. I have called and sent texts. She told me she was busy getting ready for her son's 5th party, so now she's supposed to send me the photos this weekend to download them. I am getting anxious because people are starting to ask me for the date. My question is, would you go with A for the wedding?

It hasn't even been a month yet, which is a totally normal wait time. Calm down.

ETA: If people are asking for the date...tell them. They don't need to wait for a photo card.

It hasn't been a full month, and we just had holidays. I think it's completely reasonable that you haven't gotten your photos yet. Give it another week at least.

My engagement photographers said it would take two weeks to get back to us and it did. You took photos right before Christmas and NY, plus a bday party and she has another job? I think that she's getting them to you as quickly as possible. Be patient. Also, you can tell people the date even if you haven't sent the save the dates. The save the dates aren't there as a "surprise here's the date."

See the pics, so you can compare the photographers, before deciding who you'll hire.

If she doesn't get them to you this weekend then that would be a red flag.

Wait- you paid her 130$ for 3 hrs of photography?

and you think that's expensive? please tell me I read that wrong. If that is correct I'd say 100% stand down- you got your pictures for a STEAL- and on top of that it's the holiday. Give her a break.

I agree on the pricing; I felt like I got a steal and my photographer included an engagement shoot but, to me, the $300 deposit sort of acts like payment for those. Mine was 2 hours. I think anyone charging less than $100 an hour is dirt cheap!

I am in the SAME EXACT BOAT Kristin! Like, literally. Took the pics 12/6 - contract says 3-4 weeks, 4 week mark is TOMORROW. And wanted to send out STDs like you. Not a family friend, but he's been overpromising/underdelivering... set a 'I can get it to you before Christmas' timeline on his own...then a 'way before Monday or Tuesday' (of this past week)...and then the last timeline he gave himself was YESTERDAY! I'm livid. Hopefully you get yours soon so one of us can feel some relief.

Edited: All in all, I'd go with A.

^Im in a similar boat @Whitney. My photogs do not stick to their self-imposed timelines. They sent an e-mail saying they'd have our proofs online "in a few days," which ended up being a few weeks. It's incredibly frustrating and I hate feeling like a nag. If you tell me a time, I won't bug you until after that time, but stick to your timelines!!

@OP If you want this photog for your wedding, have a timeline in your contract for getting photos back and make sure this photographer feels she can actually make those timelines.

Yes, I understand that they have other obligations but if they give a date around when the photos will be ready then they should try to stick to it. Also @Jorocka the photographer did gave me a good price for the STD/engagement shoot, but will actually charge more than the other photographer for the wedding day. That was what I was debating, once the photos come in we will decide which photographer to go with. Again ladies thanks for all your help. Smiley smile

Hi @Kristin, I don't mean to revive your thread but before you decide, make sure you consider the cost of prints from this photographer versus the prints included with photographer A. With her charging more than A for your wedding, and then the cost of prints on top of that, it may end up being MUCH more than you'd plan to spend.

My engagement session was only 1 hour and was included in the price of my entire photography package. He did it for us in under 2 weeks because he had to reschedule our date to do pictures because he had to do a wedding. It was no big deal to us but he did it fast to make up for it. Otherwise it would of been 4-6 weeks. I think $130 was a steal and should be much more patient with the holidays.

We didn't bother with engagement photos. My husband's aunt has a great camera and took about 4 dozens shots for us. She gave us the file and we ordered our save the dates the next day.
