Is my ring too big? Advice needed.

Msemily, on July 11, 2018 at 10:59 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
I recently got engaged, yay! A couple months before getting engaged, we went and got my ring finger sized and it was sized at 6.5. Now that I have been wearing it for a while now (summer and my finger are probably swelling), my ring is always shifting to the left or ring. My ring has even spun around before. It comes off pretty easily but it doesn't come off if I shake my hand really hard. I'm worried that it will be even looser when the weather gets colder. But I'm not sure if I am just overthinking this or not. Would sizing down to a 6.25 be a good option or maybe add sizing beads?

I wouldn't want to size down only because fingers swell in heat, pregnancy, and weight gain. Fingers even swell if you eat too much salt! If it fits now, and you size down, next summer it could be too tight. I'd look into a ring size adjuster, usually plastic or rubber, that will help keep the ring in place. They are pretty cheap on Amazon.

Don't do anything at this time. Adding a wedding band will snug things up, as will other life events. My rings are a tad snug now, more than 20 years later and when I wear my engagement ring it still shifts around. I will caution being careful taking off gloves.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. I did buy a ring snuggie thingy from walmart but it made my ring too small (it's a pretty thick piece of plastic). My ring does also slide towards the knuckle often too (not sure if that makes a difference). So I assume no go on the sizing beads even though they can be removed (from what I have heard)?

The more you mess with sizing the more brittle the metal becomes and potentially the looser the stone setting can get. If you really feel like you need an adjustment, a good jeweler can add sizing beads to the inside. I'd recommend going to an independent jeweler, not a mall store.

I will look into this if I decide my ring does actually need adjustments. I am planning on losing weight for the wedding and staying at that weight (hopefully).

    Hi MsEmily!

I agree with the others, holding off on getting it resized for now to wait and see how it fits over time is a good idea. Sizing beads are always an option, as is an adjuster like FutureMrsKC mentioned.

    I hope this helps!

At my jeweler’s they added two notches on the ring (they’re on the inside ..back of your finger) & if your finger grows they can always be sawed down. Our jeweler also told us that depending on the size of the diamond sometimes your ring may turn so it sittinf completely perfect may be unavoidable since you only have your engagement ring on..once you add the band it may fit better.

They have plastic "ring sizers" on Amazon that wrap around the bottom of the ring. I'd try those, wear them for a week or so, and see how you like the smaller size first!

Go into a jewelry store and get an opinion from a professional. Check out a few stores if you are afraid of bias opinions (i.e. they just want to resize the ring to make &dollarSmiley winking. But to me it sounds like your ring might be just a half a size too big...I had this problem when I first got my ring and luckily the jeweler we purchased it from did free resizing until 1 month after the purchase date.

I just recently had my engagement ring resized because I lost about 30 lbs. When my FH bought it they sized me at a 6, it's now a 4.5 I believe, and it's still a little loose. I like my clothes and jewelry to fit pretty tight (I get a lot of anxiety about my ring especially, if I shake my hand hard it gets VERY close to coming off) so I bought a pack of the plastic ring adjusters on Amazon. I think it was $5 and it doesn't damage the ring at all. I'm undecided if I'm going to resize it again before the wedding but the adjuster has helped a ton, and you don't even notice it's there!

I might try getting an better ring adjuster to see how I like it as some of you have suggested. What's a good brand? (The spiraly ones look uncomfortable).

Maybe my ring is more top heavy? It's a frame style halo (gemstone center equalevant to about .5 carat diamond).

Thanks everyone for their help so far!

    This.

B/c rings are typically top heavy (thanks to that nice big stone on top) it will cause them to shift to one side or the other. You can add "sizing beads" (1+ metal bead) on the bottom to possibly help stop the spinning, or make it a better fit. These can be removed later. This is a good tip for people with eternity bands too so that the band doesn't have to be completely redone.

That said, I wouldn't get it resized until you're absolutely certain it needs to be.

You can add these sizing beads into them. I had the same situation with my ring, because it’s not a perfect circle, due to the top part of my ring and it helps the ring stay centered. Put these in first to see if it helps before sizing. Again, the wedding band will take up some room as well. They can also put a spring in the inside to help take up the extra room as well and the spring may actually be more comfortable and more forgiving with your finger as it expands. Most often times, jewelers go for the beads, so you would have to suggest the spring (google it to see what I’m talking about). Of course, see if they can do this on a day where you can be there to see it, or make sure your ring is insured beforehand.

Update: I brought the ring to the jeweler's for its 6 month inspection and the jeweler put on a temporary sizer. I'm gonna to eventually resize it with my future wedding band.
