Is my first dance song depressing?

Chelsea, on July 23, 2016 at 2:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

So ever since I saw this one wedding video that had "yellow" by Coldplay as the music I've always wanted it to be our first dance, as well as the song that my brother sings on acoustic guitar while I walk down the aisle. However, I've told a few people about this and they think this song is depressing! What are your thoughts? Is there a meaning to this song that I don't know about??

It's your day. Discuss with FH & make that decision. Stop listening to what other people think. It's about the two of you!

I never thought that this song was depressing, personally but I would say just look at the lyrics. If you think the lyrics are depressing or aren't appropriate for a wedding then change the song. Also get FH's opinion.

I like it! Maybe the melody sounds a little sad, but the lyrics are great so I vote go for it! I'm the type to listen and look up all the lyrics of songs playing at our wedding because I don't want any songs about cheating losers or something (even if I like the song) it just seems like bad energy.

I love the song. I think if you both like it go for it. I don't think it's a depressing sing!

It's your day so choose whatever you like. When it's their day they can choose their own songs. Lol.

That's a good song, I wouldn't worry about it. It's also not overplayed and predictable.

I think you're fine. My MOH just got married and her first dance was to an instrumental version of "My Immortal". Now THAT is a depressing song.

Are you going to walk to and have the first dance as the same song?

@originalkd I was thinking about it! Bad idea?? I've pictured having my brother sing it acoustically during the ceremony and then have the actual Coldplay version for the first dance?

We're doing Yellow by Coldplay as our first dance too! We both love that song, the words are lovely and the beat is good for a slow dance. It also makes the top 20 list of popular first dance songs. ( #20). So, while not as predictable as some songs. ( Ed Sherran) it is used at weddings.

I think your friends who are saying it's a depressing song have either never listened to the words (look them up) or they are associating that song to an emotional or sad time in their own life. Yellow is one of those emotionally powerful songs that really makes you feel the moment of whatever you're doing or what is going on in your life. If you and FH love that song, if it speaks to you as a couple, I say go for it!

Vitamin String Quartet does an instrumental cover of Yellow too, that's something to think about using as your processional or as your first dance or as background dinner music too.

There have been rumors that the song is about one of the band member's friend who suffered/died from anorexia. People claim that the line about "skin and bones" references that. That's probably why so many people find that to be an odd choice.

However, that is just a rumor. Here are some fun facts about the song from the band:

    I love Coldplay.

I want to have the wedding party walk down to an piano instrumental version of coldplays "paradise"

If the song has meaning to you two then go for it.

Not depressing for me. No love song (not lost love or whatever) song can be depressing.
