Is karaoke at a wedding weird?

Natalie, on December 19, 2016 at 1:13 AM

We booked our DJ and he told us he'll throw in complementary karaoke if we would like. I've never seen that at a wedding before so i didn't know if that would be a little weird?

Don't do it. I went to a wedding with karaoke once and people cleared out immediately. People want to listen to a band/DJ and dance, not listen to drunk people butcher their favorite songs.

I would rather drink and dance as a dance, than to sit around and listen to bad karaoke.

It sounds like a good way to stop momentum at weddings. Once people stop dancing, it's hard to get them started again.

They do karaoke night at my local dive bar every Wednesday night. It turns out, Wednesday nights are a slow night for them.

When I go to a wedding, I want to dress up nice, celebrate the couple, mingle with others over a drink, and dance to music, not feel like I'm at karaoke night at my dive bar.

Your guests will probably want to get drunk if they know there's karaoke, and you could end up with a lot of embarrassment. If you have older or elderly guests, they might not appreciate it.

I'd probably say no to the karaoke being open to all guests.

I've considered a semi-karaoke like "moment" with my MOH. We actually met at a bar in college on karaoke night. The DJ said we both picked the same song (Livin on a Prayer) and asked if we wouldn't mind doing it together. We didn't know each other but we were drunk and had a blast. We almost instantly became best friends so throughout the years that's been our "song" and we always do it if there's karaoke around. I mentioned to my DJ that I wanted to do a tribute to her as a surprise....but I'm probably still not going to do it because it would be awkward having guests watch just us ball out to that song lol. So overall....maybe save that for the rehearsal dinner after party or something.

I don't think a wedding is an appropriate place for karaoke - but that is just me.

That is a hard "Nope" from me. I didn't even like having live professional singers provide music for a wedding reception all night, an amateur hour would be awful. I'd head for the door.

It sounds like it would only be fun if it could be contained to a separate room, ya mean?
