Is it worth getting a Videographer?

Destiera, on July 3, 2019 at 10:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 21
Did anyone or is anyone planning on having someone film for the wedding? I’ve been bouncing this idea for awhile and to this day, I still don’t know! I love watching the wedding videos because it is nice to listen back and watch the moment. I just don’t know if it’s worth paying for.

I think it absolutely is. We decided against a videographer early on but I found myself stressed and upset about it for the majority of our time planning. 6 weeks before the wedding I caved and hired one--luckily he still had availability! It was SUCH a wonderful decision. You can relive the day through a video in a way that you just can't do with photos.

Some people say they don't watch their wedding videos much though...... are you a home-video person? Like, do you frequently watch your own home videos? If not, you probably wouldn't watch your wedding video much. But personally I watch home videos all the time--ones my mom took of me and my brother as kids, ones I've taken of myself and my husband on my phone, etc. which is why I think the wedding video was a great idea for someone like me, because I KNOW I will watch it all the time.

Honestly, I never thought of it that way! My FH and I love home videos, since both of our families love them too! I think I will invest in one then, time to start searching!

It's not in my budget unfortunately, but I watched my parents video and it was recorded by their friend. I love it, the preist called my parents by the wrong names and their friend got it on camera with my grandmothers reactions. It's priceless. You'd only get such a moment captured by a friend or relative so I'm thinking of asking a guest to do it. My mother in law and I both have high end cameras so the quality will be fine. If you think you wouldn't mind a more homestyle video then having a guest do it is also okay.

We regret not hiring one. I am so sad we don't have a video of our ceremony or of the speeches. Those are really the things I'm bummed about not having. So if a videographer isn't in budget, I would look into having someone record those things for you.

While wedding planning I interviewed many past brides and they all told me that the one thing they regretted was not having a videographer. I also enjoy wedding videos so my husband and I made sure we could afford one. We still don't have the final version of our video, but I've seen the preview countless of times. It's amazing to relive that moment and listen to myself singing while walking down the aisle.

I've been told time and time again during my planning process to make sure I have a videographer from both those who hired one and those who decided not to hire one. My friend decided against it and figured she would get videos from guests' recordings on their phones and she ended up disappointed. She was the first person to tell me to make sure I hire a professional videographer. I never even considered not hiring one because I have my parents wedding video from over 30 years ago that I converted from tape to DVD that I consider to be priceless and am so glad I have it. It all depends on how valuable these types of things are to you. If you're even debating it, I would at the very least ask a family member to record the ceremony, dances and speeches for you.

I think it totally depends on each couple. I was adamantly against hiring one. Consulted my fiance and he was on the same page. We don't really want a recording of ourselves. I know my parents have a wedding video, but I've never watched it. And they haven't watched it as far as I can remember in life either.
We think our choice to not hire one is the best option for us.

If you love watching stuff later then it may be worth hiring a professional to film your wedding. At the same time, a lot of people will probably take video on their phones for free and without being asked. I used my cellphone to record our wedding.. we knew we wanted something to share with our families but we prefer to look back at photos. So hiring a Videographer never really important to us the way it may be to others.

I think that’s the issue for me though, the ceremony will be unplugged. So that’s why I’m kinda wondering if it’s worth getting so I at least have some footage of the ceremony.

In that case you may really want to. Maybe you can look for students or amateurs to save money?

Absolutely! We weren’t planning on hiring a videographer but we ended up hiring someone to take a non edited video of the ceremony and parts of the reception. We just watched it on our 1 year anniversary and it was so nice to watch our vows again and see the guests. Also hiring someone to record a non edited video was cheaper and less stressful than renting or buying camera and sound equipment.

Yeah sounds like you would definitely enjoy it then! Our wedding was only a month ago so our video hasn’t even been edited yet, but the videographer sent us the raw footage just so we could see how it came out, and I’ve already watched THAT several times 😂 At this point I seriously can’t imagine not having it, and I can’t believe that I almost didn’t! I definitely think you’re more likely to regret not having one than having one....... money can always be made again, but you can’t exactly redo your wedding lol. I fully think it’s worth the investment, especially if you’re someone who likes home videos!

Also btw our videographer was only booked for 3 hours (he ended up staying 4.5 and refusing to accept the money when we tried to pay him for it, because WOW this man was just such a good guy and said he was having fun and wanted to keep filming 😂) but I don’t think you need one for the full day. Mostly the ceremony is important to get I think, and the toasts at the reception, and then it’s fun to have some videos of people dancing but I also think you could just tell some friends or relatives to take phone videos at the reception and that’d be adequate too. So like, if you’re trying to budget I definitely think it’s ok to just have the videographer for the first part of the day (I mean seriously how many hours worth of people dancing are you going to rewatch lol)

At first, my FH was not sure about hiring one. Then I had him watch a sample video from the videographer I was interested in. He immediately changed his mind. Yes, it is not cheap. If you can't swing it, have a family member record the important parts for you!

I would love to have one but we don’t have extra money to justify the cost.
I can recommend a piece of equipment you can use with an iPhone to capture video . It would be easy for anyone to use!

One of my best friends said she made sure to ask people on the front row to take photo or video of the “I do”, kiss etc .

It really depends whether or not you want one. I wasn't sure about videography either but the more I was planning, the more i wanted one so I decided to make sure I found a package for both photo and video and just kill 2 birds with one stone. You might find some pretty good deals that won't make you regret getting it done. There's definitely options you can explore. Also, there's people on here who I've seen actually decided to not get videography and they were perfectly ok with that. It's ultimately your decision.

We decided that wasn't something we were going to do early on, but after everyone kept asking if we were sure, we changed our minds. A friend of my brother has recorded weddings before, and he offered to do it as a gift to us.

Yes!! I'm very sentimental about capturing memories (I'm a photographer) and would have everything recorded if it were possible.
