Is it worth altering an open back for tattoo/illusion effect?

Mona, on February 19, 2022 at 10:06 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

I hoped to find my dream wedding dress with buttons and a tattoo/illusion back (see 3rd photo) because it's so pretty, plus I'm a bit self-conscious of my broad shoulders. But I went to many gown shops and the dress I chose was my favourite despite it not having the dream back.

I am totally fine moving forward with the dress as is but would it be possible to alter the back to have any sort of tattoo effect going across my back or even midway from the strap area towards my spine? Not sure if it's possible structurally, or worth it for the cost (seems like an expensive alteration, right??), or if that style would ruin the look and make it look off lol Not talking about the buttons, just the leaf/floral parts

Appreciate opinions and suggestions!

I like both options. Your shoulders look fine! I think a seamstress can do anything you want but will the cost be worth it? I’m having off the shoulder tulle put on to hide my bat wings but that should be an easier job than yours. I also just got an open back dress and I like the open effect.

I wouldn’t change it at all. The back of your dress is beautiful and the V shape is part of the architectural interest of it and I think adding tulle to it will not look right. The dresses that are designed to have that illusion back don’t have such a defined back border, and so they look seamless. Adding a panel to this dress probably won’t look seamless. If it was my gown I wouldn’t alter it. Your shoulders don’t look broad with the back the way it is, and I’m not just saying that to be nice!

I worked in bridal for three years- it’s a pretty straightforward alteration, adding things is generally easier than taking things away. I’d recommend ordering extra lace from wherever you got your dress so that it’d match; many designers sell their lace to stores for exactly this kind of alteration. However, I’m a little confused about what you mean about not having the buttons- this type of alteration would likely require the buttons, because the illusion won’t lay flat against your back by itself- it just doesn’t have the structure.

I understand feeling insecure but you look amazing!!!! I honestly think having a tattoo illusion will take away from the dress!

Sure, that makes sense about the buttons, how else would I get in and out of the dress haha! Thank you so much for your insight!
