Is it weird to hire a violinist to play for our 11 guests?

Kaitlyn, on May 25, 2025 at 5:44 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6
Hello,

We are getting married in September and had originally invited 40 people to our small intimate wedding on the Amalfi coast. I wanted to opt out of having a DJ and dance party style reception so we decided to go for a musician instead to go with the more intimate vibe. However, due to various reasons many people have opted out of attending and we are likely now going to have closer to 11 to 15 people attending. I am worried that it might be awkward or weird for the musician to play to 13 people inclduing us. We have already got the violinist line up and deposit paid when we thought it would be closure to 30-40 and now I am wondering if I should still have them play or if it’s strange to have them play for so few. Really would appreciate peoples thoughts on this as it’s been bothering me.

    Hi Kaitlyn,

No not at all, it’s your special day! You already have a deposit & it’s better to think maybe you didn’t need one than regret not having one. Personally, I am having a small wedding that did end up being more people then intended, but when we booked the violinist we planned on if it’s really small we’re still having this because we want it! Plus your guests will really enjoy it too!

No, it will not be awkward. It's not the violinist's concert, it's your wedding day so you are the main attraction and the musician will be background music while your guests celebrate with you. I think a live musician will create a romantic vibe at your Amalfi Coast wedding! I can feel the breeze already. Best wishes

No, not weird. It's still your wedding, no matter the guest count the experience should be the same.

A violinist for a small gathering and even 40 people would be great. It sets the mood nicely. The violinist may even add a background track on songs to add more dimension. Either way you should do well.

A live musician in any context adds much to the ambiance. Recorded music is mundane -- too common (but still can be decent).
