Is it tacky to have a one year anniversary party?

Cindy, on April 29, 2013 at 12:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 35

Our wedding was August 4, 2012. On June 25, 2012 my FH was in a head-on collision. He suffered broken bones including his left arm and serveral bones in his left leg. After 2 surgeries and 19 days in the hospital, he didn't want to change our wedding date. "If you don't mind me being in a wheel chair for the wedding, I don't mind being in one for our wedding. We aren't promised another day and I don't want to wait." Were his exact words.I had two bridesmaids cancel, one the week before and one on my wedding day. The lady I hired to do everyone's makeup canceled the day of my wedding. My FH was in a great deal of pain. I had asked people to serve the food and instead, the food was left "self-serve". The hot food ran out before all our guest went through the line (about 5% not getting hot food) None of the wedding party got hot food. (we had plenty of cake, fruit, and icecream ) I would like to make it up to them & save a little face. NO pics where my husband is smiling.

I would absolutely have an anniversary party, regardless of circumstances. Why not?

I hope your FH is doing well now. What a rough way to start out your life together.

I dont think it is tacky at all -- regardless of the situation at your wedding.... and really even BETTER to celebrate the year you have had together!

We got married with my husband on a walker. We had no first dance. No pics of us driving away, no honeymoon, and our wedding video didn't play. The preacher skipped over our song by accident. So went the lady stood to sing the preacher didn't see her and kept talking. The flowers died in the reception area from the planner placing them there the night before and no A/C on til morning. I waited until I was 41 to marry. I want to focus on the good and forget the bad but how do you forget your wedding day? You shouldn't have to. All the memories are bundled together. So, I thought that a "cut the cake" anniversary party would be great. I want to have a replica of our top layer made. Our planner cut our top layer after repeated instructions to save it. We had a 3 tier cake and lots of cupcakes. (we didn't run out of cake yet she cut the top layer and left the pieces sitting on a table.) So, I think, "Let's feed everyone lots of good italian food, show them our video."

I thought we could have our first dance, and leave for our Disney Honeymoon and celebrate our anniversary there at the same time.

Ladies thank you so much for your kind words. He is doing great now! I'm talking, "cut the grass" great, and walker-free. =)

You sound like a very compassionate person, having an one year anniversary celebration is wonderful. It's never too soon or too late to celebrate love; go for it. I hope all is well with your H.

Plan the anniversary party of your dreams.

FH is getting married for the first time the day before his 43 birthday. Took him a long time to find me :-)

You do not look like you're in your 40s in your avatar. early 30s would have been my guess.

I can't believe all of that happened to one couple.... That is insane. A one year celebration would be nice, it would be a chance for you to have some beautiful memories and photos with your husband, and maybe also a celebration of his recovery and your strength through it all. :-) I would attend!

Go for it! I would say you both more than deserve to have the wedding you planned, and I think it's even sweeter to have it as an anniversary party considering your circumstances.

You all are the sweetest blessings today. Thank you all for your encouraging words. Also, we will be putting a "No gifts please" on the invitations. I just want you sweet ladies to know this is not an attempt to seek attention or get gifts.

You could even renew your vows, have the lady sing, do your first dance!

DH & I bought a house about 6 weeks before our 1st anniversary. So, we invited to a lot of people to our housewarming/anniversary party & cut the top layer of our cake (it was horrible, by the way, so don't mourn yours too much). Fortunately, we had also bought a 1/4 sheet cake in our wedding colors.
