Is it still formal if the groom wears a tie?

FutureStephD, on August 5, 2018 at 8:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
I feel like this is a dumb question, but we’re having a formal wedding (cocktail hour with white glove passed hors d’oeuvres, five course plated meal at reception, open bar throughout etc etc) and FH is wearing a black tuxedo with satin edged black notched lapel and a dark green silk tie (rendering below). Does him wearing a tie and not a bow tie reduce the formality of the event? I wrote “formal attire” on our website and I want to be sure that’s correct. I know some people on here have strong feelings about this so I figured I would get some honest answers. Thanks!!

FH hates bow ties, so he’s wearing a tie. I, personally think it’s fine.m

I think that's fine. Ties are formal to me. I think bow ties are cheesy and look like something a clown wears lol

Thanks! Same with mine - I couldn’t pay him to wear a bow tie. I’m thinking it’s okay but thought I would double check!

Yes ties are formal attire. A black bow tie is part of a “black tie” dress code. A white bow tie is part of a “white tie” dress code. The level of formality from most formal down is white tie, black tie, formal dress...

We personally are also doing formal and my fiancé will be wearing a tie. I’m not into bow ties for a wedding.

Formal attire is a bowtie or ascot.

If he is wearing a tux, he should wear a bow tie, that is consistent with formal attire dress code. If he was wearing a suit, than a tie would be ok. Also, you have to consider other people might be there in tuxes and bowties, staff might have bowties on, so it would be kind of odd for him, one of the main focuses of the evening, to not wear a bowtie.

That is nice. As long as it is not white tie you are fine.

Not traditional, in the pseudo English dress code of white tie, black tie clothing. But anything from an ascot to a long tie to no tie at all is fine if worn with a shirt designed not to take a tie. Western formal wear, the western tuxedo, is based on the French longer jacket, longer inside vest, and most often a scarf/ ascot , or a shirt with a stand up finished collar that does not take a tie, but is usually worn with some kind of jewelry at opening of neck. Your problem will be, if you have chosen a standard tux, people will look for a standard bow tie. But I hate bow ties, and provided you choose shirt and other tie to be compatible, think anything an improvement over bow ties. Boiled, pleated, and ruffled tux shirt fronts look foolish with a long tie. But nice textured or embossed fine shirts with a linear design look great with long tie.

If he's wearing a tux he should wear a bow tie. I mean in reality you can do whatever you want but in theory, those two go together.

AHHHHHHH, thank you so much!!! I just learned a lot. I’ll double check that the shirt it meant to take a long time and not a bow tie or something else. Much appreciated!!!

Thank you! This is what I thought but I didn’t want to say black tie or black tie optional since FH is wearing a tie.

I don't think so at all! We didn't specify "black tie" for apparel, but we are having a nice wedding and my fiance isn't wearing a bow tie, he's wearing a suit.

It's something. lol He hates dress shoes. I'm trying to find a compromise so we're both happy! Smiley shame I'm more than likely wearing cute sandals or Kate Spade Glitter Kids. While our wedding is nice, one reason we didn't go formal was I know he or anyone in the BP wouldn't wear a bow tie. So we went with suits.
