Is it possible to hire a DJ for $1000 in NJ?

Christine, on August 25, 2016 at 2:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

For those of you who live in NJ, what DJ are you using? I've been getting quotes for a few and they seem to be in the $1500 range which is a lot more than what we want to spend, especially since I see people on here getting DJs for $1000 less! We have a $15k budget and are at $11.6k with venue, food, alcohol, photographer and my dress. I'm having some trouble fitting everything else into our budget and the DJ is one of the bigger costs.

I would say your best bet is with a college student or someone who DJs as a hobby. NJ is expensive.

You can, but you may have to hire someone who is an amateur.

I'm from NJ and my wedding was in NJ...i had a band, which was crazy expensive. If the quotes you are getting are all within the $1500 or more mark, I would imagine that that is the going rate.

Not a good one, in NJ, in prime season. Probably no room to bargain on a weekend like that.

Don't get a student, and don't get a hobbyist. Don't get an amateur.

In NJ, all the people I recommend are ****. You can find someone on CL or TT, but trust me, you'll regret it.

Try EMG music group, ask for Tom and tell him I sent you.(the number I have is ****). They are fabulous; not mouthy, not tacky and weird, total pros; in fact, I think another bride here just used them

Try Pete Lopez; 201-943-3790. Lovely guy, good player.

If you start right now, you might be able to get a discount for paying in full ahead of time, but really....for 500? I'd cut favors, programs, menu cards, expensive shoes, aisle runners, the guest list, the bridal party. Simplify the flowers. Do what you can, but don't book a cheap, creepy DJ. I've seen that far too often and it's not fun to watch.

Try Silver Sounds. They have a bunch of different djs with varying prices. We did our in prolly from them for $1300 for 6.5 hours. He was one of the mid range ones. There's others they have less expensive

I am also in the tristate area and was finding only quotes of $1600++. I finally found someone out of MA who was only $1300 with uplighting and ceremony after his 10% off discount because we have a Friday wedding. It took a lot of research, and I had to find someone from a more remote area who was willing to travel. I'd try looking for some who are outside of your area and see if you can find some cheaper options! Good luck, it is definitely going to be tough!

I don't know how expensive nj is so I'm not sure how helpful I am. I kept getting standard quotes around 2500 and was NOT happy about this. I honestly took to fb and asked friends for recommendations for affordable ones and found one for 1395. I'm on upstate ny and that's not far under 1500, but it's a bit under what I was getting quoted everywhere else.

Are you in North Jersey? I am paying $850.00 for the DJ portion of the DJ services (not sure if this is because I got a package including uplighting and photobooth, though). I am also in Southern NJ, though, and may have gotten a slight discount for booking early and being off season.

I found that south jersey offered cheaper prices. The DJ I went with is located in central jersey and is coming up for my wedding. They are charging $1000 for the basic DJ services. I added a bunch of other stuff on and am paying much more than that. But if you literally just wanted one guy to be your DJ/MC, they were $1000. So it's definitely possible.

You may have a harder time because you are in prime season. A lot of places were willing to offer a discount for November. I doubt they would do that for September. But it doesn't hurt to tell them your budget and see what they say.

Celia, I used them! Call Tom and talk to them. I found EMG's rates to be reasonable and they were total pros throughout the process!

Thanks for the suggestions. Has anyone gotten a Sunday discount for anything? I know September is prime wedding season. We don't want anything fancy like logo on the floor, cloud effects, etc.

    Haha @Fitz... I wish.

You did Star? That is GREAT! I love, love, love them (I actually married one of them, lol...to someone else!!! As in, not to me!)

They are total class, and I just adore them.

Christine; call them tomorrow and tell them exactly what you're looking for. They don't push power-ups that you don't need.

I would go wit A+ DJ's out of Allentown. Great people very affordable AND they have photobooth options. Less then $1000 for DJ
