Is it okay to have two marriage licenses??

Elizabeth, on August 12, 2013 at 6:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

My fiance and I live in NYC so we got our marriage license here last week. I thought the church we were getting married in was in NY, but technically it's in CT (just on the border). We're supposed to get married in 19 days and now we need to get a new marriage license, is that even allowed? Does anybody know whether it's legal to have two marriage licenses as long as only one gets sent in?

**** EDIT

Thanks for your answers; a marriage license in NYC is valid if you are getting married anywhere in NY state. Yes you need a license in the state/ county you're getting married in, but I already have a license. My question is, because i need to get a new license in CT in the county that the church is in, will it be a problem that now I will have two marriage licenses, one in Greenwich, CT and one in NYC? Will they even grant me a license in CT seeing that I have one in NY?

Thanks for any help! Stressing out, and it's so hard to find a straight answer on those government sites!

Don't you have to get a license in the county that you actually get married (if it's in the states)?

You should go back to the clerk and ask them about it. You need a license in the state/county you're getting married in.

Ahh. Gotcha. Meaning, do they have to cancel one or the other? That I don't know - but I believe someone told me that they are null and void if you don't "use" the license within a certain amount of time. A friend of mine had issues with that and almost had to have another wedding (very tiny, of course) because they almost didn't get stuff done when they were supposed to.

So the NY one might just expire.

And I doubt CT will check with NY - there are people with double lives who illegally/unethically marry more than one person

Thanks Erica! The church is physically in NY but for whatever reason the address is in CT. It is some crazy effect of years and years of redistricting I guess.

I would call the church office that you are getting married at, and ask if if has a different states address but is in a state (which my friends kitchen was in PA and her living room in NY)

They should give you an idea and if you do then I would call the county clerk in CT where the church is and ask. But I do know you need one in the state you are getting married in.

I think as long as you only fill one out and send it in, it's fine. it doesn't actually become a marriage license (as in representing a legally recognized marriage) until you and the officiant sign it and send it back.

I agree on calling the church. You need to know what county it is in, and they'll be able to tell you for certain, that way, you have the right license.

I know here in Texas it says we can get our marriage license in any county and have the wedding anywhere. So like I can go to my local county office get the license and then have a destination wedding and it still is valid. So check with the states. My state at least I would not of needed to of gotten the second one.

A marriage license is the ability to get married. With New York you can be wed anywhere in the state. I would call the church and ask if you need a CT or a NY license. They sign them all the time and would know. If the physical address is in the state of CT I would say you need a CT license.

To answer the 1st question you can have as many licenses and get married as many times as you like in as many states as you want... as long as it is to the same person. One of my just too cute couples, goes away every year on their anniversary and renews their vows. Their goal is getting Certificates of Marriage from all 50 states.
