Is it okay to have only the Flower Girl?

JLW, on September 30, 2015 at 8:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

My first cousin, who is like my little sister, will be 9 years old by the wedding. When I got engaged last year her first question to me was if she could be the flower girl. Of course I said yes, because she is adorable and has everyone wrapped around her finger.

Anyway, right now we don't have a ring bearer. Our only option is my FH cousin's son who is 4. They also have a daughter who is 7, who I feel like we would have to make her a FG too so she's not left out. I have never meet them before and FH has never been close to them. When I asked my FMIL she said she didn't know if they would even come to the wedding and didn't know if they would want to be a part of it. (She's not sure if they will want to travel with 2 younger kids.)The only reason we would ask is to have both a FG and RB.

Is it okay to have just the FG? Or should I make her a Jr BM instead?

I'm having two flower girls....all though they could have been junior BM's but anyway....and no ring bearer. You can do whatever you want and make it work.

My daughter is going to be the flower girl and she will also bring the rings with her. I found ring boxes that are shaped like roses and I think I will go with those. Or just tie the rings to the top of her basket.

I think you can do whatever you want. We aren't having a flower girl or ring bearer, but as a guest I wouldn't think it was odd to just have one or the other.

Absolutely it is okay! Try not to feel like you have to add one or both of them to the wedding. Just having a flower girl is perfectly fine.

Do what you like best. I had two FGs and no RB. My cousin has a 3 year old son that I chose not to have as my RB. Even though my sister suggested it multiple times.

I only had a FG, and she did a great job! Walked all by herself at 4.1/2 and won the cuteness prize of the day. DH's niece was 10 and got promoted to JBM.

Thanks for the advice everybody! I feel better knowing that this isn't something I have to worry about. I will ask her if she still wants to be FG or wants to be a JBM instead, and then decision made.

Just as with adult attendants, the important thing is to have the people you want to stand up with you, not to have matched male/female sets. As for titles, go with what works for you and for her.
