Is it odd to request a cake with all faux tiers except for one?

I do not have a lot to spend on a wedding cake. My fiance and I want to have a nicely decorated cake, but have all but one tier be fake. We'd rather have sheet cake in the back that will be cut and served to our guests.

Fondant should be outlawed. Playdough for your cake!

How about separate layers instead of a tiered

Okay sondra (op), I saw your comment, if you don't care what the guests think then what was your question?

I actually think your best option would be to get s one tier cake and cupcakes. They can make a beautiful display of this and everywhere I asked this was quoted at around. $300 cheaper than a full cake.

Also, a decorated cake doesn't have to have fondant. Mine was buttercream frosting and was delicious. And I don't know anyone who doesn't like "from scratch cakes."

I have attached a picture of a one tier/cupcake display. This is typically a lot cheaper and looks very nice.

@Emily I clarified in my second comment that all bakers offer fake or semi-fake tiered display cakes, and that it is the more popular option, and it's easier for them. I didn't mean it was standard.

As a guest, I'm not judging how your cake looks... I just want to eat delicious cake. Have a small cutting cake and serve uber delicious sheet cake, if that's what you want.

I'm not sure what your cake budget Is but Sam's club has 3 tiered cakes for $65 I think and their sheet cakes are relatively inexpensive as well

When you get a piece of sheet cake, you know it's not part of the ''wedding cake', which is the whole point...for your guests to share a piece of cake with you.

If you hire a quality baker, their cake will not taste like a box mix, and unless you personally poll every guest and hear, "No, no, don't give me a good quality cake!!! I want funfetti!!!" then you can't really make that statement.

Get cupcakes. If the cake doesn't matter to you, then don't spend the money, but please, no styrofoam...

My FH once went to a wedding that did this! he said since the sheet cake was kept in the back no one even noticed that the actually cake wasn't being served, or that at least no one seemed to care!

I think so long as people have a dessert to eat no one will care!

Your guests won't be fooled by the fake tiers, as most of the time bakers don't layer the sponge and frosting how they do in a tiered cake for a sheet cake.

I see one small round cake displayed all the time. It's used for display, cake cutting, then sent home with the couple. Then everyone, couple included, get cake that's already cut and set to go or there's a dessert table.

I would save money and not even do faux tiers. Just do a single tier if that's what you want.

I have also shot weddings that don't even have a cake. When it's time for dessert, a piece of cake, a bowl of fruit, icecream, whatever is decided is served.

We don't want to spend a lot on a cake either. We may do a small cake with a topper. The rest will be assorted and decorated cupcakes!

Haven't read the comments. I asked bakeries in my area about this option (getting a single cutting tier with faux decorated tiers and sheet cake to be served to make up for the fake cake). I found that bakers either wouldn't do this or that it didn't save any money. They still have to make, fill, and ice the sheet cakes and decorate the faux cake tiers so it's actually more work for the baker and that was reflected in the price. It ended up being more expensive than just getting the big cake.

That's what I'm doing. We're doing a 3 tiered cake in the design we like, only the top tier is real for cutting. Then we ordered some mini cupcakes in an assortment of flavors (including the cake flavor) and I'm also making some of my late mom's desserts so we'll have a dessert bar. Fyi: my 3 tiered cake is only costing $150.

Talk to the baker, as someone who bakes and does wedding cakes as a friendor (I know, I know, they should hire a pro not speaking for myself) it takes me just as much time and effort to decorate. The baking and the cake isn't the hard or timely part.

As I've said, I don't care if my guests can tell if it's from the displayed cake or not. I was just wondering if it was not uncommon to order a cake with some faux layers. I am making the sheet cakes. I just need a display cake I can cut into for tradition. Though it is an option i would prefer it to look like a tiered

I haven't picked who in my family is making the sheet cake. I was just generalizing. I also don't have a sam' s club near me nor a membership. I have a bjs membership and not paying for another warehouse that is too far away
