Is it not proper to plan my own bachelorette party?

tinyred15, on September 21, 2016 at 5:56 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Hi all! My wedding is this coming March and is a destination wedding (Belize). Due to everyone needing to travel internationally to come to the wedding, we decided not to have a bridal party and to have everyone just focus on getting there (no bridesmaid dress costs, etc.). Since there's no bridal party, my mother is hosting my bridal shower. I will be traveling home for it (since I now live out of state) and figured it would be great if that weekend I could also have my bachelorette party since most of my best friends still live in that area. However, I would be the one organizing the bachelorette party (all I want is to meet up in our downtown area and bar hop). Is it rude of me to organize this myself? I don't expect any of my friends to do this since I told them I won't have a bridal party since I didn't want them to feel pressured to travel internationally if they didn't want to. Thanks!

Since you will be in town and want to see your friends, I think you can plan a "girls night out" and request no gifts and not call it a bachelorette party.

I think youre being really considerate of your friends to ensure they make it to your events. Since there is no bridal party then I would assume you plan the girls night out yourself. But I would give it a different name like @Kelli W. suggested.

I agree with PP. I would try to gather your friends, but I wouldn't make it wedding related. I'm sure you'll have just as much fun.

I agree with Kelli. As long as it's not labelled as a "gifts and free drinks" type bachelorette party, I see no problem with getting together your closest girlfriends and going out on the town to have a good time.

I 2nd Kelli! Calling it a "girls night out" is perfect. A bachelorette party typically implies paying for the bride throughout the night (in my experience at least) and you can't throw yourself a party where other people pick up the tab.

You cant plan your own bachelorette party but you can go hang out with all your friends on the same night.

Thanks for all the input, everyone! I'll probably just round up everyone for drinks and not actually call it my bachelorette party.

Call it a girl's night out since you do not have a BP. You can definitely plan it yourself though.

Kelli is spot on. I wouldn't call it a bach party and I certainly would not allow gifts, however, you could definitely do something else!

Also, kudos for being so considerate of your guests!

Can't have a Bach party cause they're 4hr away, so I just want to go out on the town and have drinks with local friends. More like a 'You're getting married next week' rather than a themed bachelorette. No presents, no gimmicks, just a good time.

I didn't know you get gifts at a bachelorette party anyways so I think you coordinating everyone at a bar with some penis straws is perfectly fine.

I don't think it is proper, but I did it. I wanted it just the way I wanted it. I didn't want to go out, didn't want to party, etc. So I planned a last fling before the ring type weekend with the girls. We stayed at my grandparent's rental house, laid out, swam, drank, and cooked out for a weekend. It was fun.

^ Love calling it a "last fling before the ring" party. Doesn't imply "bachelorette i.e. please pay for me" but still lets your girl friends know that this your girls night celebration to celebrate your impeding nuptials.
