Is it normal to have a teenage bridesmaid?

Rosalie, on December 3, 2022 at 8:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

So, I have this teen (16, almost 17) in my family who I dearly love. We're quite close and I've always thought I'd have her in my wedding party. I asked her parents first, they said it would be okay. Then I asked her to be my bridesmaid and she accepted. There's a lot of mixed opinions on teenage bridesmaids, but does anybody here have a similar thing going on?

Your bridal party can be whoever you desire! I was actually once a ten-year-old junior bridesmaid in my cousin’s wedding.

I think where you might be hearing the mixed opinions is that some people think it could be an issue when things like the bachelorette party come up. As there is commonly alcohol present, she will not be able to partake in that, so some brides have the dilemma of deciding whether include the teenage bridesmaid and have a dry party, or to not invite her at all and only let her partake in the activities on the wedding day or showers. If you’re not having a bachelorette party though, then you don’t have to worry about that.
It could be that her parents won’t want her to partake in the bachelorette party anyway. Everyone’s situation is different, so it will just be something you address when/if it comes up.

Oh yeah, definitely no alcohol. I'm not super into crazy last night of freedom bachelorette parties, there will probably be some champagne at the wedding, but aside from that, there's not going to be any alcohol or inappropriate content. I'm thinking more of a relaxing spa day for my bachelorette.

More than 40 years ago, I was a teen brudesmaid. It wasn't my day but I felt like a princess and was on cloud nine because my cousin loved me so much and invited me to her table. I think these days the roles of bridesmaids may have changed. But you may only require her to stand up for you in your wedding day.
