Is it normal for a groom to buy a suit and groomsmen to rent?

jessica, on April 4, 2017 at 1:09 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

My fiance really wanted to purchase the suit he gets for our wedding because he needs a suit and we have other weddings coming up, so he thought why not buy something. The only issue is, I know his groomsmen will rent suits because they won't want to pay so much to buy, so I'm wondering if this is common and how people get everyone to match, or at least look similar?

A lot of weddings I'm seeing on blogs like Green Wedding Shoes mention the grooms got their suits at places like Zara, Hugo Boss, etc., so it seems like a common thing, but I want to hear someone's POV on it!

I'm not wearing a dress that matches the bridesmaid, and there's no reason my FH should dress to blend in with his wedding party either. He is considered getting a custom suit made, and his groomsmen will be renting suits from The Black Tux.

I'd research the prices of buying vs renting. Case in point, FH needed a suit in an emergency (funeral and he didn't have anything that fit), the suit we bought was LESS than his suit rental for his sister's wedding last weekend!

ETA: the suits don't have to match, but if it is something universal, like a black or charcoal, it wouldn't be hard to do, if that's what you/FH want.

I think it's pretty common. My FH is wearing a blue suit he purchased, his GMs are renting gray suits from MW.

Try mens warehouse? If a certain number of groomsmen rent, then the groom gets money toward buying a suit :-)

My FH bought his suit and his BM suit from Menswearhouse and Menswearhouse set up a rental group that had similar suits already set into the group for the other two guys. Made it simple and easy to get everything matched up. I'm pretty certain any large chain suit store will do that for you.

My FH bought his suit and the last I heard, his BM (he is only having one guy on his side, his best man) is going to buy his, as well. It was his choice though.

My FH and his groomsmen are all renting their tuxes. However he will look slightly different to distinguish him. I.e. Black and white tux versus groomsmen that will wear black tuxes with Burgundy ties/vests.

My husband actually did buy his suit, along with the other groomsmen, for his brother's wedding. They got them from Macys. They were navy suits (pants and jacket) and light brown shoes. One of the bride's friends was able to get an overall discount for everyone, so that saved a little. In total, the suit came to around $250 or something like that (shoes were another $100 or so). It worked out well for my husband, since he doesn't have much dress attire, so now he has a nice suit Smiley smile

FH bought his tux and the groomsmen are renting. FH is a string bean with muscles so rentals don't fit him well at all therefore he needed to get something that could be tailored.

FH tux is blue with black lapels and the groomsmen are wearing the dark grey Vera Bradley tux from MWH with ivory shirts and black ties.

I've heard that renting suits can be just as expensive as buying! We told our guys to wear black suits and those who didn't already own them bought new ones on sale from men's wearhouse for like $199. And they get to keep it. I know renting a tux can be just as much if not more. DH wore a tux because he owns a tux and the other guys wore suits fwiw

It all depends but it doesn't really matter. We are all renting tuxes. But my brother who is also getting married is buying his suit.

You can definitely buy much cheaper than renting if you shop in the right places! My FH and groomsmen bought their suits for less than $90 from outlet mall!

FH and all his groomsmen are actually buying suits from Jos A. Banks. They all preferred to spend the money on something they could re-wear. $260 for suit, suspenders and white shirts. We are buying the ties for everyone.

Most men can use their suits again. this sounds like a good plan to me. Sadly, not so much with bridesmaids. Most dresses scream, "Bridesmaid".

FH bought his, then his parents are paying for all the guys to rent their suits. If they weren't, they would end up buying them since it is cheaper in the long run.
