Is it necessary to have Godparents?

Erika, on June 14, 2018 at 11:40 AM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 8

Hello girls,

My fiance and I have been wondering if we need one. What will their role be?

Have godparents in the wedding or for the birth of your child? Sorry, I'm confused about what you're asking.

You do not need one. I never had one and my children will probably not have one. God parents are usually around the time of child's baptism and are supposed to be there to be the spiritual leaders in the child's life.

The Catholic, Methodist, and Lutheran churches are really the only denominations that still partake in a Godparent thing, and this is after the child is baptized. So unless you are one of those you can skip it completely! Smiley smile

Wedding wise- Godparents are there to sponsor the couple but again- not needed! And they would have had to been provided as you were a child- not just a random person you'd pick Smiley smile

I've only ever seen Godparents in the context of having a child. In my circles, having a godparent literally means if something happens to the parents, the godparents agree to be the primary caretaker of the child.

Are you talking about for any future children? If yes that would depend on your belief system. Both my kids have godparents. They are there for religious guidance and played roles in their confirmations.

Are you talking about now for you and your groom? No it is a bit late in the game for godparents unless you are having an adult baptism or something similar.

I guess I wasn't that clear. It is that I read an article that mentions about it. That is why I was asking. I always heard it is done for Baptism and not a wedding.

Yeah, I believe it has to do a lot for children or if you belong to the Catholic Church. Thank you for making it clear.

Thank you. It isn't if we are baptized or not. I am Christian and I never heard that you need to have one but since I went online and read an article in which it mentioned that you should have one like a person who will guide you. Like a family member who is an example of marriage.

Oh I see! My parents chose my aunt as my godmother, but the way I see it, if something happens to my FH or me, I would hope my parents or my FH's parents would be able to take over rights of my children, therefore I don't see a need for a specified godparent. A lot of people choose their best friend or a relative as a godparent, but I would have full trust in my parents or FH parents before it got to that.
