Is it necessary for both a cheese/cracker/fruit display and appetizers?

My venue charges $17-$20 pp for 3 appetizers, and $11 pp for a cheese/cracker/fruit display. Is it necessary to have both? Will guests be pissed if there’s not both and will it be enough food for cocktail hour? Is salad also necessary? The venue charges a premium for every little piece of a meal, so salad is an additional 8-10 pp. So I am thinking -hors d'oeuvres & rolls for cocktail hour , main course, cake, and s’mores. My fiancé and I are trying to stay on a budget otherwise we won’t be able to have a wedding. Thoughts?

To clarify, are you having food at cocktail hour and then appetizers during the reception or are your appetizers being served during cocktail hour?

I personally am doing veggie/fruit/cheese platter, Italian & sweet and sour meatballs, spinach & artichoke dip with assorted crackers and tomato & basil bruschetta for cocktail hour. We’re doing a buffet however and our caterer charges per tray, not per person so it’s much more feasible with a small guest list. With your pricing I might not do both

I'm only going to do passed appetizers because we're a summer wedding and I've seen what can happen out in the heat and the sun and the bugs 🙈 so if you're outside in the summer it might be am easy decision. But don't worry about it! Appetizers and drinks are just to hold people over and get them in the mood and also socializing. Our caterer has tons of experience and only provides passed OR displayed, so I think it must be pretty normal. 😊

I think it's totally fine to just have passed apps! I think your money is better spent there than on cheese/crackers/fruit.

Passed apps only are fine. We had passed apps only as well (8 different apps in total). If I were you, instead of the trays, I would try to add an additional passed app so that there are 4 in all. I wouldn't have rolls served at cocktail hour though. Rolls would be a better fit with the main course + sides.

We are having alittle bit of appetizer for cocktail hour while we are taking pics. Gathering ourselves the once the whole wedding party is introduced dinner which is buffet style will start right away so our head count will be between 55-60 ppl family and friends intimacy wedding nothing to big
