Is dj lighting worth it?

Meghan, on June 9, 2020 at 9:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
I’m inviting about 100 guests to my wedding. Neither me, my FH or our families are big dancers. I’m not sure about our friends. I am hiring a DJ but is it worth it to pay for lighting too? If not many people dance I feel like it would be awkward with lights.

It makes it fun, especially if there are kids at your wedding.

Maybe im a rookie, but i didnt even know this was a thing! im for sure not doing it because we will have other lighting during our reception. i can tell you that my brother had his wedding a few months ago and they sure as heck didnt have any lighting. it was still so much fun! i guess it is probably personal preference - if you are willing to spend the money, go for it. but otherwise, i dont think you will look back and regret not doing so. that is definitely a handy place to cut the budget some. good luck!!!

If uplighting is needed to transform a poorly lit room, or if you are trying to create a mood, or have a theme, fine . But club type lighting , flashing, moving lights, will please some people and irritate others. The great majority of my friends and family do a casual or elegant and formal, multigenerational party without any glitzy or club touches, and people dance and dance. And also all drink, but moderately except for the 2-3 alcoholics in every crowd. Lots of friendly table to table chat. Grandfathers dance with daughter's and nieces and grandchildren, not just romantic couples at some. Others, it's couples mostly. But no one likes the FJ patter, of club lighting, or general noise. And a fair amount of the fancing is ballroom style, and a wide variety of music that makes the glitz out of place. You have to decide about your crowd. If you don't like it, are you providing a club, or having a ball, or a general family social time? Decide from that. The music sets the tone, and Good music drives dancing / bad discourages it. But lighting, only if you want special effects.

Worth it. Without it, your reception area will be very dark.

It really depends on your venue and what sort of vibe you are going for. I'm a photographer (so I pay a lot of attention to light) and into things like interior design, and I can tell you lighting makes a HUGE difference in the ambiance of a room and how you feel in a space. Jaime Wolfer, who is a popular YouTuber and wedding planner, includes uplights on her list of things not worth splurging on, but it really depends on what sort of lighting is already available. If your venue has adequate natural light or well balanced lighting to begin with, I think DJ lights are totally unnecessary, but if your reception area is dark it might be worth the extra money. Also if you want a disco or club feel, with lights of different colors, etc, it would be worth it. I personally prefer a brighter environment with ample natural light and then things like tea lights, string lights, candles, chandeliers and creative lighting fixtures, etc to provide beautiful ambient light and mood, vs just some large uplights installed in strategic places, or colored strobes or special effects, but that's me. You also need to consider safety for guests as well - a minimum amount of lighting is necessary for people to be able to move about without bumping into things. Your lighting needs will vary based on the decor, light available, whether your venue is indoors or out, time of year/time of day (especially if outside or the venue has windows), and activities you have planned, so take all of that into consideration when deciding if splurging on lights is a good investment or not.

I'm in a similar situation with my family - we aren't huge dancers. But, we're doing uplighting because I know I want a darker room for the reception (i.e. the overhead lights off) so we need light in other places.
