Hi, Im on a tight budget and feel like a dj is a extra cost when I can add music on a ipod to use. Not sure if this photographer was trying to upsell his dj business, but he told me the weddings that have not had a dj have been a disaster. I plan to have my cousion make announcements and have speakers set up. I want the wedding to be fun should I cut something else out in order to afford a Dj? The Djs I have talked to have been $800-1,200 is that the average cost? Thank you for your help!

We are doing the iPod thing but out wedding is in the morning and the music if more for background noise and the first dance and father/daughter dance. Other than the planned dances I don't think there will be many people who really want to get down and dance. And our 'reception' is going to be fairly short compared to most, only about two hours long. I think it all depends on the 'mood' you want to set and how much of a big party feel you want.
