Is anyone doing sheet cake instead of tiered?

Evelyn, on June 19, 2019 at 1:04 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8
I want to order cake from my favorite cake place in town, and I have a cake tasting with them this weekend. The issue is, a tasting includes a full consultation. My fiancé and I have decided that we want to do a sheet cake along with other assorted desserts (ex. rice crispy treats, pie, etc). Many of his family members (and himself) have celiac disease, so we don't think there's really a point in having an ultra fancy cake. Plus, picking a design for the cake is not something that either of us care to do. A sheet cake would simplify things. I'm just nervous to go to the consultation and mention wanting a sheet cake for my wedding, because I don't want them to jack the prices up just because the word "wedding" is mentioned. What are your experiences with wedding sheet cakes? Did you have any issues with pricing because it was for a wedding?

We are doing a tall tier cake but the center is faux. The top tier (10 servings) will be real and we will save that for our anniversary and the bottom tier (80 servings) will be real and we will cut that during the reception. We will then have 2 sheet cakes (170 servings) in the same flavors as the tier cake to be cut and served by the staff to the guests. We are still paying the per slice price for the tiered cake and sheet cakes (260 servings). Your sheet cakes might be a little cheaper because there isn't as much decoration as a tiered cake. And you will have to disclose that it is a wedding or when they come to deliver your cake and desserts and realize it is a wedding you could be in a breach of contract and not get your cake.

We're doing a small gluten free cutting cake from a bakery that is completely celiac friendly. Then we'll have sheet cake for the rest of the guests. Our sheet cake is from Costco, I cant eat it but FH and everyone else that tried it said it was really good and definitely wedding worthy. Sheer cake from a fancy bakery will definitely be more expensive.

I think that's a good idea. At the end of the day it's just cake. You can do a small cute one for your cake cutting and then serve the sheet cakes in the back. I think the sheet cakes would be cheaper.

We did a small 2 tier cake and then sheet cakes for the rest. I didn't care about cake at all.

I walked into my fav bakery and asked. They said it should be the same as any sheet cake they'd do.
They did remind me they do wedding cakes but I just don't want to bother with a tiered one, I want a sheet cake.

We're doing 5 seperate 2 or 3 layer cakes (and some cookies and brownies) rather than a large tiered cake. It ends up cheaper, and now people can choose b/w 5 different types of cake! 4 of them will be 2 layers, while 1 will be 3 layers - this is the one we will cut. We are not saving any for the anniversary.

Nothing wrong with a wedding sheet cake if that's what you want. You can always try something like this.
