Is anybody DIY'ing their cake stand?

RhnCasi419, on August 8, 2015 at 10:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

This is crazy. First we were going to go without a cake stand. Then our caterer told us we should have one. It is a 3 tiered cake. The cake vendor told us we would need a stand with a 20" diameter. We are trying to stay under $60.00 I've YouTube'd how to diy cake stands and they are super easy. A plate, a candlestick and some industrial sized glue. Except, I would need to find a sturdy 20" serving plate and a solid candlestick to hold a 50 lb cake! We sooooo don't want to spend over $100 for a cake stand we will only use once. Our venue doesn't have one on hand to borrow, nor does our caterer. Any advice?

If you have one close to you, try Homegoods. I know it's not diy, but I've seen posts about them having very reasonable prices.

U can make it out of solid foam board. paint decorate or add flowers to it. you can also use a plain sheet of glass and place on top of low square vases with some led lights in them. check it out u gonna spend very little

I've heard Styrofoam is very good for that. Just be sure it's sturdy enough to hold it and very even as each layer tends to move a bit.

My aunt had her tables skirted. So, what she did was use a sturdy hat box under the table cloth. There was enough slack for her to drape the cloth over the box and table. She used a thumb tack to steady the cloth, then turned it to give it a swirled effect. She then skirted around the table cloth. It looked awesome! We are doing the exact same thing to create tiers to our candy buffet! As cheap as you can get and super easy.

I found this "as is" at TJ Maxx for I think $40. Pretty sure it started its life as a side table or lazy susan. Added some spray paint and voila! Here's the before and after, ignore the mess

Most of these cake stands are less than $50 and there is a wide array of styles.

It's sturdy. I do cakes as a side business and have made them before. I actually got my materials from the game supply store and some of the inspiration for making it.
