Is an engagement party and bachelorette (no gifts, just fun) ok when eloping?

Priya, on April 10, 2022 at 10:52 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

I'm SO excited to essentially be eloping (having a small ceremony with our immediate families) with my FH! It suits us so well to have an intimate ceremony and we can't wait. We've been together for many years before getting engaged and our plans to elope have not been a secret - friends and family generally know this. We do want to have some kind of low-key celebration to bring our friends and family together, and based on our honeymoon, timeline, and general feelings about having this kind of party, we'd really prefer to have it before the wedding. At our wedding we want to just relax and enjoy the day for us without "planning a party and seeing our friends/family" being in the back of our minds.

I have read a lot of forums that say that an engagement party is in bad taste, since basically no one there will be at the wedding. However, I'm hoping we can mitigate this by including it in our invite (something along the lines of "we're eloping, but want to celebrate with our friends and family first!" - side note, is it ok to say eloping in this context? Didn't realize all the small ceremony descriptions at first, but eloping I think makes it most clear that no one else except those who we specifically include ie immediate family will be there). Also we would include "please no gifts" or something along those lines too, we're not in it for the gifts! The party would basically be an outdoor bbq style with food, snacks, drinks, maybe a couple wedding-y games like the shoe game or something short and fun, but mainly informal and hanging out with our friends and family. We just got engaged so if we do have an "engagement" party we'd want it to be in the next couple months anyways, maybe a little more into the summer so weather is better for an outdoor event.

I don't want to have a bridal shower, although I know my mom really wants to do all of it for me, just because I feel like a shower is more about gifts anyways, and I think we can tie "shower fun things" into the engagement party (having a party with friends and family, some cute wedding games, etc.). If she's really set on it I thought we could always do a fun activity with the couple of girls who will be at the wedding: our moms and sisters. But again I really don't think we need it.

Second thought is I still want to do something fun with my girl friends to celebrate, something along the lines of a bachelorette, but it would just be like a fun girls night with my closest friends. Again, I wouldn't be expecting gifts or anything, and it would be pretty inexpensive - like if they all pay for their dinner out or something like that. It wouldn't be some massive getaway, and if any bigger expense were to come up (like needing an Airbnb for one night) I'll happily cover it. Is this kind of thing ok too? I'm not even sure if I should call it a bachelorette or just a girls night, but it is something I want to do with my friends as well.

Again, trying to make this not tacky and enjoyable for everyone, and make it super clear we don't want gifts or anything, we just want to spend time with our people Smiley smile We know our family is a little disappointed they aren't coming to the wedding, so we do want to have something to include them, plus for ourselves we do still want to get people together in a more informal way and keep our wedding more private. Please let me know your thoughts!!

If you plan to follow etiquette, then when you decide to elope, you forfeit any and all pre wedding parties. Instead of an engagement party, have a celebration of marriage afterwards. Do the same with a girls trip. If it requires travel of any kind, it is not inexpensive.

Engagement parties are common in some social circles and not done in others. Guests already know and understand that gifts are optional, unless they are attending a shower. So no mention of gifts should be made at all.

I would do a post-elopement party/get together with your friends and family.

    Etiquette wise, PP are correct.

If you prefer to have your celebrations beforehand, I'd call the bachelorette a generic "girl's night" so there is no additional pressure to attend. I'd do something similar with the engagement party. Call it a get together without tying it to a wedding so there is no pressure to bring gifts and no expectation of a wedding invite

Thanks for the input. I guess I didn't realize that if you're eloping you give up so much of the pre-wedding excitement - our friends and family are super happy for us and it seems weird that they wouldn't want to help us celebrate the lead up to it, even with the full knowledge in advance that we're eloping and not expecting on coming to the wedding.

I appreciate the idea of just making it non-wedding related so it's more casual, but I guess one thing I still do like is some of the cutesy games/etc. Would it be in terrible taste to include those then? Our friend and family group is pretty casual and not super traditional so I didn't think it would be a big deal, and they would obviously know why we're bringing everyone together, but don't want people to be offended and gossipy about it.

We're still really leaning into doing something before rather than after, just based on making it what we would be most comfortable with.

PS "girls night" would only be getting a local airbnb for more sapce because we are living in a super small studio apt.. no travel needed, it would just be getting friends together for dinner and a girls night in!

Etiquette is that people shouldn’t be invited to celebrate an event that they aren’t invited to. I would that’s even more important if you are having other guests.

I agree that some sort of post-elopement celebration with family might seem a little more appropriate? I think if I were to put myself in the shoes of family/friends who'd get invited to any of your pre-wedding festivities, I would be confused about why you want to have a celebration with everyone as an engagement party but not for your wedding? Or I could see some people even think "oh I was good enough to be invited to this but didn't make the cut for the wedding". Obviously this all depends on your social circle, but I could definitely see some people having similar thoughts despite your family being very aware and supportive of you two wanting to elope.

Thanks for the input! To be honest it just doesn't work for us to do something after the wedding - season will be harder to do something outside, I'll be busy with a new job, and FBIL will be across the continent for his work. So I think we're going to break etiquette and just do something low-key in advance. It is either something small in advance or nothing at all, and I think my family will be more hurt if they're not able to be a part of anything relating to our engagement/marriage.
