Is an early January wedding ok?

I originally wanted a March 2019 wedding but I forgot since that's in the middle of Lent the Catholic church doesn't do weddings then. So I started thinking of alternative dates and the FH and I, not wanting to wait longer, thought of January 5th 2019 since it's before Lent and all of my bridesmaids/MOH will not be back at college/gradschool until a week later (I wanted to work around their schedule some as well so they don't have to worry about trying to help me and school work at the same time). I told my parents this and now they're saying they don't think having it right after the holidays is a good idea since money is tighter for most people after Christmas and plane tickets are more expensive (most of our guests are in state though..) I guess I just wanted some outside opinions on having a wedding shortly after the holidays. Is it as big an inconvenive as my parents think it is? Or will guests not care? Thanks in advance Smiley smile

I actually love the idea of a January wedding since everyone is still in a festive mood. We're considering this as well because our hashtag fits the ringing in the new year theme. With plane tickets, it's so far in advance that people should be able to get good deals if they book now. Just make sure to send save the dates and you'll be fine!

I think January is fine if you live in a region without too much winter weather or if you're in a region that knows what to do with winter weather like Michigan. In my region, a mere 6-8 in shuts the entire city down. Having it rain on your wedding day is one thing. Having it snow and no one showing for your beautiful and costly reception is another. There are certain people in my life I would definitely want at my wedding and it would break my heart not to have them there because of the weather.

I think it's OK but definitely not preferable. Most people are exhausted. The issue is if your bridal party has to go back to school on Monday and wants to move on your wedding day.

If you give your guests plenty of notice then they have time to save up on top of saving up for the holidays. I do want to note since my FH and I are going on vacay in January that plane tickets and air bnb prices significantly drops after Jan 3rd (since it is post-holiday season) and increase in March (Spring break season begins)

Why not just shoot for a NYE wedding? I think that would be pretty awesome. Also if some people don't want to go, that's okay.

I think it would be perfectly fine, and I am glad you are going with it.

@Victoria, NYE weddings are horribly expensive and if someone is doing one, they better be prepared to be a little more "over the top" with things because many people do NOT want to give up their NYE partying unless it is amaze-balls!!

I photographed a wedding last year on 1/3 and if it wasn't for a snowstorm, everyone seemed fine with the date. No matter what date you choose, you're likely to have at least a few people complain about the date. Unfortunately, it's impossible to please everyone.

I'm getting married a week before that date. The two things that I learned from another friend with a winter wedding are that you actually have a higher chance of more people coming in from out of state when your wedding is around a holiday because they are able to easier extend a trip to visit family or add on to vacation time, and at the beginning of the year like that, most people will being starting fresh with a new load of vacation time. Also, by that point, plane ticket prices are going to be going down again because that's normally the latest weekend that school winter breaks would go.

Weather is always something you're going to have think about it - it will be a toss-up. Kind of depends on your location. I'm in the midwest, but we don't normally get heavy snow until mid January-April, so my date is fairly safe on that front.

A January wedding sounds beautiful. Money might be tight after the holidays but with almost 2 years to plan that shouldnt be bad for most people. You can even set it up as a family holiday gathering. All spending new years together. New year's anniversary anyone?

I reeeeeally wanted a December wedding (my original date was 12/16/17), but I ended up moving it to my current date because December just wasn't a good time for my VIPs. Having them be able to attend was obviously important, so I gave up my Christmas wedding and will now have a wonderful spring wedding instead that all VIPs are able to attend.

Like others have said, it just all really depends on your guests and what works best for everyone. One of my best friends got married on 1/18/15 and it worked out for everyone (no one minded that it was three weeks after Christmas). I'd check in with your VIPs and if it works for them, then great! If not, then maybe reconsider a time that works better.

But, honestly, have the dream wedding you've always planned on. If your guests really want to attend (especially in regard to spending), they'll figure out a way to be there.

Of course since Im a 12/30 bride Im gonna say that it sounds like a great idea! The church will still be beautifully decorated and I get a pretty tax credit....plus it's a great time for out of town guests to make an excuse to come home for the holidays.

I was concerned about that too but then I realized that people will know in advance and if they were planning on attending the wedding, they will make it work! You guys do what is best for you. It's so exhausting trying to please/accommodate everyone.

My sister had her wedding December 30. We went out just after Christmas and were there for New Years. I thought it would be weird, but it was actually the perfect time of year! The whole family was together between Christmas and New Years! Even if you wanted to postpone Christmas like my family did, we all had Christmas together. Any time of year is going to be difficult...winter is Christmas/new year, Valentine's Day, then spring comes and it's Easter/spring break, summer is full of vacations and camping, august/September is school...no time of year is really best. Do what you want, when you want.

My FBIL and FBSIL got married in January in Boston and we're in Pittsburgh. It was an out of town wedding for almost everyone (FSIL is from Jersey) except for the few guests who are older and have a difficult time traveling in general. I say go for it!

I don't see a problem with it. It probably is true that people are more tight for money around that time, so I probably wouldn't be surprised if your monetary gifts are smaller than they may have been, but weddings aren't about gifts they're about sharing your love with your closest family and friends Smiley smile

My FMIL has said from day one "the people who want to be there for you will always find a way" and I so firmly believe that. Our date isn't placed after a big holiday like yours but it is a Friday and most of our family are out of state and we didn't know if 6 months was enough warning for them to come. Now we have tons of out of state family booked and there are friends who live right down the road who have thrown the most ridiculous excuses at us not to come. People go to incredible lengths to watch such a special day

I'm getting married in January and my only concern is weather where I live (which isn't an issue for you). I think it sounds like you scheduled well for your party and people know well in advance to plan for it so excuses mean jack. They'll come or they won't. They'll bring a gift or they won't. Do what fits your schedule and make sure the guests you have know that they are appreciated and loved. Slightly rougher sounding than intended, but you know what I'm getting at.
