Is a year too short of an engagement?

Amanda, on June 20, 2017 at 1:42 AM Posted in Planning 0 59

I'm recently engaged (like two weeks ago!) and beginning to barely plan things (the date on my page is a guess). Is a year and two months too short to plan things? Should we push things back? There's really no reason for the date other than the time of year. I've just seen so many people on here with dates two years in the future. Is a year too soon?

I don't think so. I got engaged in February and started planning two weeks later.

As long as you have a venue and can manage your time you should be fine.

My engagement is only 9 months and I've been able to get everything done within that time frame with no stress. People tend to have longer engagements to save money or to wait for a specific venue.

I would set a budget first and book a venue. That will help you decide if you need to push the date back or move it forward.

My engagement is 8 months and I work full time, go to grad school, and have a part time job and I managed to get everything figured out with time to kill.

I got engaged June 10, 2016 and the wedding is July 8, 2017. We knew we wanted a summer wedding so it was either going to be one year or 2. One year went by really fast but I think it was a good amount of time. If you want a July wedding next year I suggest booking asap!

Nope, we're putting it all together in 10months. You have plenty of time

A year is fine. We've had about 10 months to plan our wedding. We did get lucky and got the last summer Saturday for our venue, though.

As long as you book your venue and major vendors ASAP, it's enough time.

I was engaged a year ago today. In a couple weeks, we will have been married six months. I actually felt that the short planning time helped keep me from getting bogged down or obsessed with details. "Make a decision and move on!" It did help, though, that my location had tables/chairs/linens/caterer and coordinator. If your venue doesn't have those things, it might take a bit longer. But I was mostly done with the big stuff in the first two months, so a year is totally not too short unless you need time to save up more.

Decide what you want. The more guests you want and more elaborate things you'd like to have will cost more $$$. The more money you need, the more time you'll probably want. Do what's best for you and FH. Don't go into debt over a party. Smiley smile

I don't think it is. Our engagement is almost a year..we got engaged January 2017 and we will be getting married in early November. I think it really just depends on what season you want your wedding in and what your area considers as the off season. Technically we planned ours in the off season so we've had everything available to us but I think we also had an easier time because our wedding is so small (27 people) Just decide what you want with FH venue, date of wedding and a rough guest list and go from there! Remember you don't have a date till your venue is booked!

My engagement is 6 months. More than enough time to get everything done and I got to book the venue that I really wanted. Luckily there was one Saturday left where it was free, this summer. I just couldn't be picky about the date.

Nope! I got engaged in February and our wedding is January 2018. I really wanted a winter wedding, and I'm also working full time, going to grad school and interning and it's going well so far!

A year was about when I started planning. We've been engaged a little longer than that, though.

Start with your budget and guest list. It's great you're a little flexible with your date. That will help with booking a venue.

    P.S. Congratulations on your engagement!

Before I joined wedding wire I had no idea people had such long engagements. I always thought a year was standard give or take a few months. I planned my wedding in a year.
