Is a second alterations opinion a thing?

Bottom line: I have my dress, it’s been fitted, I’m not sure if it is right.
Longer story: I just went along with what the salesgirl suggested and ordered a size 14 wedding dress. I’m normally a size 4...6 on my bigger days. But I know wedding dresses are sized different and she was the expert, so...
The seamstress asked me why I ordered such a big dress. It was WAY too big. She ended up taking 2 inches off of each side of the structured/corset style top. When I went for my final fitting, I was in the middle of a busy day of work day. I HATE driving downtown Portland and honesty was just done going to these appointments. I was by myself. I took my dress and threw it in my car and went on with my day. When my work day was done I went to my mom’s to give her the dress to store (wedding is 12/29), I tried it on because she hasn’t seen it yet. I told her I needed her opinion on wether or not the skirt is too wide (like, still a size 14) for the top (now much smaller). The first thing she said to me was “honey, you have back cleavage!” 😳😒.So now I’m worried that the skirt is too wide AND I look fat in my dress.
Bottom line: would it be crazy to take my dress to an alteration shop in the suburb I live in and ask to try the dress on and tell me wether or not it actually fits me? I am trying not to just keep spending more and more money (at this point I’m on to this dress over $1900), but I want to feel confident on my wedding day! I’m not sure I do right now.Is a second alterations opinion a thing? 1Is a second alterations opinion a thing? 2

I don’t think the dress is big on you but I don’t think is fitted to you. Not sure if it makes sense!

If you are not satisfied then I would take it. I can see what you mean and sometimes consultants do not know. I order a size smaller than suggested because I know I will drop about 15 lbs and she advised against it but I stuck to my guns. It zips up and now I do not need alterations. I would try to take it in tomorrow since your day is upcoming and hopefully it won't take long. Good luck and regardless you will look beautiful. It is a nice dress.

It's totally fine to get a second professional opinion! Better to check than wish you did!

If you're not happy with it there's nothing wrong with getting a second opinion.

From your description I was expecting your dress to look bad. I don't think your dress looks horrible but it does look like it could be a little more fitted. I would get a second opinion, this not the time to settle for less than what you want. You should feel beautiful in your dress. If you are not comfortable or happy it will show. Maybe the original seamstress's skills were not up to par.

Also when you ordered your dress did they measure you and show you the sizing chart? I had my measurements taken and then saw where they fell on the size chart and ordered according to that and had to sign in two places to ensure we agreed on the sizing. LOL. Its odd that they would order such a big dress, I am wondering if it was a typo or error on part of the bridal salon?

It may have been an error, I don’t know! By the time the dress was in the salesgirl was no longer with the shop.
They did measure me but I never saw a chart. And I signed saying that i know what size I’m ordering. Seemed weird, but you know that’s what people say- wedding dress sizes are weird. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But even after alterations this dress has never fit or looked like the sample did.
I just left a message for a nearby alterations shop close to my house. I’m a high school cheer coach and the place i called helped us out of a pinch when uniforms arrived 3 days before our first game and 2 girls had had growth spurts. After that, if she sees the dress and says it is right I’ll feel better!Thank you all for the input! In my real job (lol- coaching doesn’t pay the bills) I work with people in poverty, so spending so much on a dress has already caused me some feelings of guilt. But you all are right- I need to feel good on my big day!
