Is a makeup artist worth it?

Julie Ann , on November 15, 2017 at 12:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I have been thinking about getting a makeup artist to do my bridal pictures and for my big day but I'm not sure about it. I am really good at doing makeup myself and have plenty of products. Is it worth it to hire a pro? Any suggestions for good ones?

Follow up question... Did you just do it for yourself? or for your mom, bridesmaids, etc? Im worried about the cost adding up, trying to keep to a budget

    Yes- it's worth it.

Not looking busted every day for work isn't the same as full pro make up for a photo shoot. Unless you do regular photo shoots and in front of the lense work- the odds are "it's not enough" is probably accurate.

I think yes. Professional photography is different than normal photography and you don’t want to be stressed trying to do your makeup on the day of your wedding - I always mess up when I’m nervous. I didn’t get a makeup artist for my engagement shoot because we had to run after work and there was no time. I’m pretty good at makeup so I didn’t look bad but there is a clear difference between my face during the engagement shoot and my face during the wedding (which I paid a lot of money for). I put on more than average makeup for the engagement shoot and you still couldn’t tell in the pictures.

They are worth every penny. Even if you were an licensed make-up artist, I would suggest hiring someone. You'd be surprised at how nervous/excited/frazzled you may feel day of. That's no time to be messing with something someone else should be doing for you. In the grand scheme of things, professional make-up is a relatively low cost expense. Do it - you'll be happy you did.

Yes, if it’s a really good one! Photos will tell the tale.

Honestly I'm probably not going to hire one. It's just not in the budget. I also don't like when others do my make up. I'm planning on doing a few trials and having someone take outdoor pictures. I also plan on getting a makeover at Sephora to try out recommended techniques and products.

You're your own biggest critic. You'll see the pictures and see flaws doing it yourself, other people may not notice but you will. I say go for it! You only get one day so why not make every bit perfect rather than wish you did looking back(:

Nope... i do my makeup better than a makeup artist. I had my makeup done and hated it. I'm getting a makeup trial with my hair trial, i told the girl I'd pay for it but i would probably do my own makeup on my wedding day because i do a much better job.

I did my makeup for my professional engagement photos and it looked great, in my opinion, i probably could have gone heavier on the foundation or used a more full coverage one.

Absolutely it's worth it! Pros do makeup for professional pictures more often than the average person. If you don't like what they do you can just simply communicate what you want or how it's lacking and they are responsible to correct it.

I wasn't going to hire one either, but my mom and BFF talked me into it. i don't wear much makeup and was worried about looking washed out in photos and crying everything off. my HMUA did an amazing job, my makeup lasted all day even through multiple periods of tears, and i felt like the best version of myself. it's also just a nice treat to have someone else do that piece for you! the morning we spent at my MIL's getting ready all together is one of my best memories of the day.

Almost everyone on here is going to steer you towards hiring a pro. However, I chose to do mine myself and I think I look great and not all "washed out" like I was told I'd be. I'm not even THAT good at makeup, nor did I use anything but drugstore products.

So I would say do what you are comfortable with. If you have confidence in your skills, I say go for it!

Also including a pic of myself just for reference. Obviously I wanted a very natural look.

It also depends on how important the photos are to you. If you want to go for perfection, yes, hire a professional. But if it's not in your budget, ditch the idea. Honestly, who even notices whether your makeup was done by a professional or just by yourself? Either way, you'll look stunning!

I'm personally hiring one because I need it. When I do my own makeup vs someone else doing my makeup is very obvious. That being said, I've known people who've done their own and still looked good and those who hated what their MUA did. I think if you want to practice a few times and take pictures of yourself it may help you make that decision.

I just didn't want to worry about it, and I wanted it to stay all day.
