Is a customer design wedding dress necessary?

Jasmine, on May 15, 2019 at 3:44 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I was told that I must get a custom design wedding dress but I wonder if it is necessary?

Thought I'd start with going to an off the rack place and go from there, I don't think I'm very picky when it comes to picking out a dress.

What are your thoughts?

Who told you that you had to get custom? There are many options in bridal salons.

Who told you that you needed a custom dress? Normally you go to a salon and they would order a size that fits your largest measurement. Then you would get alterations.

Nobody needs a custom dress. If that's what you want, go for it. Just be aware that most custom dresses are much more expensive than something you find in a bridal shop or online.

Just been doing some researching and was advised that that is the best chance to find a dress that I really really want. For example, what if I like the style, but not the material or the design, or so forth? And I read that that takes about 9-12 months for it to be ready.

And at first it does sound kind of extravagant. Why would I want to throw away a bunch of money for a dress that I'm only going to wear once?

Guess I'll have to go out and try different dresses on to find out what I like.

    Thanks for the advice!

A custom wedding dress is absolutely not necessary. There are thousands of wedding dresses to choose from. Search for bridal shops in your area, including chain stores like David's Bridal and see what's out there!

A custom dress is a luxury and never a necessity.

Definitely not necessary. I'm getting mine custom made because the dress I found that I REALLY REALLY want, I can't seem to find who the designer is or where it's sold in stores and I can't pin a valid website for purchase. It's costing me $1250 which is more than what I wanted to pay for originally but this is my one splurge and I'm ok with that. I don't think it's terrible especially knowing there's people that spend more than that on dresses they pick out in physical stores or on validated websites.

The production time also depends on what company you go through and how complicated or expensive the material of your dress is. Mine is pretty simple and will only take maybe 4 months. There's a lot to take into account. If your wedding is in October though, I honestly wouldn't risk it. There are definitely a lot of options to go with online or in a physical store. Just also think about the time you'll need for alterations as well, if need be.

If your date in your bio is correct I’m not sure you’ll even have time to order a dress at a traditional bridal store, you may have to shop off the rack.

I didnt even think of doing a custom dress. I am 'customizing' the dress that ingot my removing the illusion neckline and adding a corset, but I'm not doing a custom dress. Maybe that's what was meant by you need a custom dress?

Psh, I bought mine from David's Bridal in the size I currently wore. Once it came in I did alterations to customize it to fit me. You can make it "yours" by adding sleeves, adding color, adding fabric, taking away the train, etc. My dress took about 3 weeks to come into the store and another 6 to get alterations.
