Is a 10 piece Band too big for 80 guests?

the Grooms, on June 20, 2016 at 10:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

I am trying to decide if a 10 piece Band (Guitar, bass, drummer, keyboard, 3 female vocalist, and 3 piece horn section) is too big for an 80-100 guest count. I love the band, seen them many times, they play lite jazz music during dinner, and motown to today's hits for the reception. They take breaks in turns so there is no down time. My only concern is it might be too big for a smaller wedding. Any thoughts?

I would say at 80 people it's more intimate and you don't want the dance floor empty

I think a lot of it has to do with volume control.

We had a 12 piece band. Before we booked them, we asked that they play at half their usual volume. We also had the dance floor next to the band. Most of the people in the ballroom could hold a conversation, with the person sitting next to them, without losing their voice/yelling, which sometimes happens. The dance floor was packed all night and guests are still talking about how good they were, a few years later.

I've been to a few weddings where the band was so loud (one with 8 pieces and 1 with 12), that guest ear drums could have exploded. For the last one, a number of guests were hanging out in the cocktail hour room, just to avoid the volume.

I think Dreamer is on to something. I don't think it is too big in principle, but if your venue is smaller, make sure that it isn't too loud.

Thanks, the ballroom is a good size at 200 capacity. The venue also has separate rooms and outdoor space. Thank you Dreamer, will definitely check into them playing at half volume.

Are they good? I assume they are or you wouldn't even be considering them.

Give your guests a treat. Eighty to 100 guests is not exactly a mini-wedding. Live music can be so electrifying.

They are great! I use to work at a country club, and worked a lot of weddings, they were always my favorite band. Most of the weddings I worked was 200+ weddings so I didn't know if it would be too much for 80-100 guests.

I think it sounds GREAT!!!! IF they're a terrific band. DO IT! I bet all 80 guests will be on the dance floor! And the waiters too.

I went to wedding with a live band. There was always a large group of people on the dance floor.

If they sound good, I say go for it! I've got a band too. I know some great DJs, but live music is such a thrill for me.
