Is $1,000 reasonable for a ring setting?

My FH and I have been planning to reset my grandma's engagement ring for some time now, I just wanted to take time to make sure both my mom and I were really okay with changing it from its original setting which needs a lot of repair work.

I've never looked at settings separately from an entire engagement ring with the diamond included, so I'm not sure what to expect on price. I really love halo and solitaire pave settings, and the diamond is .5 carats if that makes a difference. Is $1,000 really unrealistic for what I'm hoping to get? Just don't want to go in there and feel dumb if everything I'm interested in is way out of our budget.

If you bought your diamond and setting separately and have some input/photos let me know!! Thanks Smiley smile

Blue Nile would be an excellent resource for you to price out settings!

My setting was 1500 and added in the cost of the Diamond he chose.....but it depends on the person financial situation and what they are comfortable doing and I would recommend going to a local jeweler which we did and had so much better experience then the big box stores

The diamond on my e-ring came from my mom's e-ring, its right under half a carat. FH had it placed on a new setting with a halo, and paid right under $1000.

If you live in Nebraska then I would make the trip to Omaha and visit Borsheims. My husband paid just under $10k for my engagement ring and my wedding band was $1200. The total set is appraised at $22k. I ended up with a dark spot on one of my prongs and they completely rebuilt the head and redipped the ring for free. The customer service is amazing and since they own their diamond mines the markup on the stones is about nonexistent compared to other jewelers. I have heard good things about Nebraska Diamond as well but make the trip to Borsheims just to compare what you can get for the money.

@kreestan, where did you go? Super pretty!

@jennifer, we live in Lincoln so that's not too far, you're definitely right it is worth it to compare options. Your ring is also beautiful!

My ring is Verragio and they sell settings to be paired with diamonds purchased separately. Mine was $2400 but it's 3 stone and very details. Plus, name brands always hike up pricing.

Going off of this, I don't think $1,000 is unrealistic for a solitaire type setting.

Verragio lists starting price on their site, this may give you an idea. Although really, expect less than what you see on their site.

We reset my ring, and it was around $2700, but that also included the purchase of the wedding band, which was about $900-$1000. ETA: my rings were completely custom made which were part of why it was so expensive

Depends. If it's custom it may be. I wanted to get diamonds from my grandma re-set for a wedding band and despite my providing all of the diamonds it was going to be $1100. It was $600 to buy an already made diamond band. We opted to use the diamonds in something else down the road. If you can buy a setting that already has the halo it will likely be more cost-effective than true custom work, even if you're providing the stones.

I would take the ring into jewelry stores and actually talk to them. We used my great-grandmother's ring as our engagement ring and had to get a new head on the ring. We went with an independent jewelry shop, because of how careful they were. They understood the ring had a lot of meaning and were super helpful the entire time. It was more expensive to go with them, but it was worth it!
