Ireland Honeymoon Help

Kayla, on July 30, 2018 at 11:20 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 10
So my FH and I just decided southern Ireland Is our destination. This will be both of our first times traveling outside of the US so I need all the help and insight I can get. We are going in October. What should we wear? Should we go through a tour company or do it ourselves? I’ve looked into a couple of companies but I’m nervous that I won’t be able to get the full experience. I’ve heard that when the companies mention that you get to “see” a landmark, you’re basically riding by it and not stoping to explore. Anything would help! Thanks!

You could always book individual tours on sites like viator or trip advisor if you’re trying to stop by the actual landmark. I personally have never booked through an agent bc I always make the time to research my own deals..& I think that’s what it really boils down to, having access to someone who knows where to look to help you save. A quick google search told me that this is Autumn for Ireland & avg temps range 57-64 F..I’m sure you could get a better idea of the last couple yrs for avg temp if you searched the actual place(s) youll be going. But overall it said you need to dress warm & to bring water resistant wear as well. Don’t forget your passport of course. Prepare to do some of your currency exchange prior to leaving (usually your bank can do it if you ask in advance) dont forget to inform your bank of course that you will be leaving. I forgot to do that once & it was a headache getting my account unflagged in the middle of using an atm. Of course, my info is only general bc I have never been to Ireland, but I have traveled quite a bit, including out the country.

My FH and I are also going to Ireland in October (or November). We are using https://www.discoveringireland.com/ for our travel plans because they offer several different types of tours including self-driving tours and bus tours. For research on what to pack I just did a Youtube search for Ireland in October trips and look what everyone is wearing. Pack a converter and a plug adaptor for any electronics you bring.

Hi Kayla! Since it is getting closer to winter, I would pack jeans and long sleeve shirts with a rain jacket and a sweatshirt! For nights out, I would wear a dress with a cardigan and boots! Where are you all staying? If you are in a hotel, the concierge desk can definitely help you out with the best excursions and tours! If you are in an Airbnb, I would look around for tour groups and go with one of those! I have heard great things about Ireland, you all are going to have so much fun!

I would say renting a car and exploring Ireland is a big part of the experience. There's no need to purchase tours, but a heritage card might be worth it if there are a lot of sights you want to see: http://www.heritageireland.ie/en/info/heritagecards/ Our favorite places in Ireland were Killarney, Dingle, and Clare, we did not particularly like Kilkenny or Dublin, and Galway was okay! We went in April, but the weather really does not fluctuate much throughout the year. It felt pretty cold there even though it was 50-60 degrees because the air is almost always moist. I would definitely pack layers. I typically wore a track jacket or fleece under a moto jacket, and a HAT is a must. Some type of waterproof boot or shoe is definitely a must. It actually didn't rain while we were there but the ground is always wet.

I would suggest booking through My Ireland Tours if you don't want to have to navigate everything/worry about much. We are currently planning a trip through them and I've read so many great reviews. It's a smaller, family owned company so they are more flexible and personable than many of the large tour companies. They have lots of affordable packages that include transportation everywhere, activities, meals and lodging!

Yes yes yes to all of the above! Dingle was my absolute favorite, and Clare hit close to home because I found (really) distant relatives there! Smiley laugh

Great packing advice from the above comments. Expect rain. I went in August and LUCKED OUT- it rained once in 10 days but that's really not normal. It'll be chilly so pack layers and extra socks!!

Whether you're going with tours or on your own, you're going to have an amazing time. The people in Ireland were the friendliest I've ever met and I always felt so welcomed and safe. If you decide to travel on your own, keep in mind that you'll be renting a car that's probably a manual transmission, and they drive on the left! That took some getting used to but if you're up for it, it adds so much to the experience!

I don't know how adventurous you are, but I prefer to make my own plans. That way I could take detours if I heard about something interesting, extend or shorten my stay in certain places, and spend as much time as I wanted in parks and at those castles...all the castles! Planning your own itinerary takes more work than going with a tour, so the toss up is up to your preferences.

Sorry for the novel here but I love Ireland and I know you're going to have an amazing, cozy, unforgettable experience regardless of your travel plans!Smiley heart

In October pack warmly. Layers are the best idea. You can always pick up a stunning souvenir of an Irish sweater there!
