Ipod wedding

Hey everyone! We are having a low key wedding in October of next year. We aren’t dancers and neither is the crowd we are inviting. The venue has a sound system and even a mic for us to use for any announcements so we decided to do a iPod music reception. I want the music to be more background noise while people mingle and talk. Has anyone done the iPod DJ before or been to a wedding where it’s been done?

    I wanted to do this because I feel the same. But my mother has now asked for a DJ as her one request for our wedding, bc she might be the only one dancing but she wants to dance! But our venue actually said a lot of people have been skipping the DJ and just doing the play list. So I vote do it!!

    I'm doing this. I'm having a wireless speaker that I can hook to my iPad and then I've created individual playlists for each part of the wedding. Like, really break it down. I've asked my aunt to hit the play button when the corresponding playlist is needed. For entertainment we are doimg drinks, and board games (which is what my crowd is into). The music will be background.

    We used a spotify playlist instead of a DJ and it went over really well! A few things though... make sure you have someone responsible for MCing (like, making announcements, encouraging people to get up and dance, etc) and to manage the playlist. It really isn't enough to just press "play" and let the playlist go... you need to change songs if people aren't responding, adjust the volume, etc.


    Another thing is don't be afraid to go off-playlist! We used our playlist for about 30 mins and then my husband's best man (who we had put in charge of manning the playlist) and I ended up just picking some off-playlist songs because we felt like they would fit the mood really well, and THAT was when people actually started getting up and dancing.


    A DJ definitely does WAY more than just pressing play on songs. I cannot emphasize how important it is to read the room in order to choose what song (or what type of song) to play next. That being said, I still don't think hiring an actual DJ is "necessary" if you have a friend or relative who would enjoy taking on this responsibility (and who you trust to do so!)

    This is exactly what we’re doing. We’re only having 25-30 guests, so we’re creating a playlist.

    If you guys arent big dancers, i think that will work. my crowd is definitely going to be way too large and far too rowdy to do anything like this, so we are getting a dj. that is a clever way to cut costs on your behalf though. if you dont feel that it is necessary, theres no need for you to do it!

    I did go to a wedding like this and it didn't go over very well. They didn't pick music anyone knew, though, so the crowd was just wholly uninterested. I think it was on them, honestly. They didn't use a sound system, but just an iPod with one speaker, so it echoed, no one knew the songs, and there was no other entertainment provided. There was so much off that it really just didn't work. I think your plan sounds much more do-able!

    I've been to a couple Ipod weddings that had different results because they went in with different intentions. One the couple put together the night before and brought their own sound system. While the music was nice to listen to, it was not danceable at all, so the bride was upset when no one danced. The second was mainly used for background ambience after the first dance and father/daughter dance. Guests had the option to dance but most chose not to in favor of mingling.

    Make sure you know what your crowd enjoys and what type of ambience you want (a dance vs background music) and have someone available who can switch songs if something doesn't work out with your crowd.

    For our micro wedding & reception, we had a soloist for the ceremony & cocktail and switched to a playlist for dinner/reception. Worked fine!

    I am planning on doing the same thing for music!! we don't intend on having dancing, my dad doesn't dance and didn't want a father daughter dance either, (NO one in my family dances, lol, unless you count the 10 and 12 yr olds who dance to disney dances when they play in the movie!) I want to have board/card games available for the guests while we are getting family pictures after ceremony/before reception... Music is background and I just need to get a "sound guy" to hit play on the different lists, including ceremony music will be from itunes playlist
