Invite Send-out

A, on January 24, 2020 at 6:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 12
My wedding is this October, but we aren’t sending out save the dates. There are only about 30 guests, mostly family, but a lot are out of town. We were thinking of sending out the invites in February or March, earlier than usual, to kind of tell people to save the date and start finding lodging. Is that too early to send it out? Is there a reason it’s supposed to be sent closer to the date?

The reason invitations are sent closer to the date is because a lot of times people can’t RSVP that far in advance. If you send them early and make the RSVP date the normal time closer to the wedding a lot of people will set it aside and completely forget. It will be a lot of extra work for you because you’ll have to follow up. Can you do email save the dates to give people the general information for travel and accommodations?

I think they all know the date, pretty much- it’s just parents, siblings, and grandparents. I know that many of the people we are inviting are very adverse to receiving emails (just not their thing). I could make sure I’ve told everyone the date by word of mouth maybe?

I think that's way too early for an invite. Why can't you send them out at the regular time? Is it because you think they won't be able to find lodging?

Save the dates, in my opinion, aren't really necessary and just another added expense.

Partially it’s because I’ve got them done and I’m excited, partly it’s because there is travel involved for over half the people from several states away, and partially because several people have already asked when I’m sending the invites out.

Typically it's 6-8 weeks before the wedding, but if you're really excited about sending them out sooner, maybe 10 weeks before?

I definitely wouldn't send them out yet. They are normally sent our closer because guests can't properly RSVP that hard in advance and you would likely have to follow up with them anyways.

If I really don’t mind following up (there really are not many people invited), could I send them out earlier? Or would that still be a bad idea?

I still think it is a bad idea. People will either forget or tell you they can/can't come and then plans change.

It’s way too early to send them now. No one will be able to RSVP to an October wedding this early. I’d say the absolute earliest you should send them would be 10-12 weeks. I typically don't like going outside of the 6-8 week timeline, but based on your circumstances, I think 10 weeks is fine.

I'd just send save the dates and try to find that in your budget. Or even send e-save the dates.
